About this listen

Everyone thinks Emmy Dockery is crazy. Obsessed with finding the link between hundreds of unsolved cases, Emmy has taken leave from her job as an FBI researcher. Now all she has are the newspaper clippings that wallpaper her bedroom, and her recurring nightmares of an all-consuming fire.

Not even Emmy's ex-boyfriend, field agent Harrison "Books" Bookman, will believe her that hundreds of kidnappings, rapes, and murders are all connected. That is, until Emmy finds a piece of evidence he can't afford to ignore. More murders are reported by the day—and they're all inexplicable. No motives, no murder weapons, no suspects. Could one person really be responsible for these unthinkable crimes?

Invisible is James Patterson's scariest, most chilling stand-alone thriller yet.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2014 - In typical James Patterson fashion, Invisible was suspenseful, fast-paced, and filled with twists and turns. The story follows Emmy Dockery, a brash and outspoken FBI analyst who is convinced that a string of supposedly accidental deaths is actually the work of one unknown serial killer. Dismissed by both her family and the Bureau, Emmy must find the link between these closed cases before more lives are claimed. Patterson and Ellis did a spectacular job with both character development and plotline. There was never a dull moment as the story built up to its twisted and surprising climax. I couldn’t put this book down – and with January LaVoy as the female narrator, I can’t wait to revisit this story in audio. –Laura, Audible Editor

Loved it

Could not put it down. Totally different than any book of its kind. I won't say more as to not spoil it. I totally enjoyed it.

Love Patterson not the narrator!

What did you like best about Invisible? What did you like least?

The book had a good plot and the plot twist was interesting. I was not impressed with the voice talent. January LaVoy could have done different voices better and Kevin Collins seemed way to "theatre". He's playing a serial killer but he sounded more like a contrived fake laughable villian.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Graham...couldn't relate to his character with the voice chosen. Seemed to contrived.

Would you be willing to try another one of January LaVoy and Kevin Collins ’s performances?

January LaVoy, maybe...Kevin Collins, probably not.

Did Invisible inspire you to do anything?

No

CREEPY...GOOD?

The story was very good and kept me guessing almost until the end. It was however extremely graphic. If you are faint of heart, not so much for you. I told someone, "It is so disgusting but I can't stop listening. I want to know what happens."

From Boring to Exciting

What did you like best about Invisible? What did you like least?

The first third of this book was so trite, predictable and boring I almost gave up on it. It did pick up, however, and the last half was so captivating it was difficult to put down.

So tiring to listen to the endless advertising in all the Patterson/jointly written books. Apple, Starbucks, etc. These brands are mentioned in contexts where normal speech would not use these words, so the authors' corporate prostitution is obvious.

Also dislike Hachette Audio's constant sound effects and music designed to guide my reaction to the book. If I wanted that, I'd go to a movie. That's what used to be good about books - I got to have my OWN reaction. It's as bad as the constant music so proliferous on all current TV dramas. It detracts from the dialogue instead of complimenting it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Invisible?

The revelation of the villain's identity was a shock, as was the clever ending.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The reader for the villain in this book was particularly over-dramatic in the beginning, but finally settled into the sociopathic person being portrayed without all the overplaying. Female reader was great, with many voices.

Too disturbing and graphic

The plot was very diabolical. The descriptions of what and how the torture was accomplished are very graphic and not to my taste.

Horrifically Violent

This story turned my stomach upside down. It is difficult to listen to. The narration is good and the plot keeps you engaged. But I couldn't sleep without nightmares about the torture. Have strong nerves and a bad memory or this book will haunt you.

Amazing

This book is brilliantly written and wonderfully performed. I have been telling everyone to check this book out! The plot is really engaging and was full of twists that I wasn't expecting. The romance lover in me wishes there was an epilogue though :)
