About this listen

Breastfeeding is natural, but it is not entirely instinctive for either mothers or babies. The Nursing Mother's Companion has been among the best-selling books on breastfeeding for over 30 years, with over 1,000,000 copies sold. It is respected and recommended by professionals, including The International Lactation Consultant Association, T. Berry Brazelton, and The American Academy of Pediatrics, and is well loved by new parents for its encouraging and accessible style. Kathleen Huggins equips breastfeeding mothers with all the information they need to overcome potential difficulties and nurse their babies successfully from the first week through the toddler years or somewhere in between.

This fully updated and revised edition provides information on topics such as:

  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • How to cope with breastfeeding obstacles and challenges
  • Incorporating a nursing routine into working life
  • Treating postpartum headaches and nausea
  • Nutritional supplements to alleviate postpartum depression
  • Sharing a bed with baby (co-sleeping) and the risk of SIDS
  • Introducing solid foods
  • Expressing, storing, and feeding breast milk
  • Reviews of breast pumps

This edition opens with a new foreword by Jessica Martin-Weber, creator of the very popular website The Leaky Boob and a new preface by Kelly Bonata, creator of the go-to site KellyMom. These two much-loved authorities speak to the importance of owning an authoritative breastfeeding book that cuts through the jumble of opinions, information, and misinformation on the Web. Now more than ever, The Nursing Mother's Companion is the go-to guide every new mother should have at hand.

great as a reference not audio book

What made the experience of listening to The Nursing Mother's Companion, 7th Edition the most enjoyable?

first few chapeters were great and read well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

NO! it becomes more and more repetitive as you go from chapter to chapter. you should only read the chapters that you feel you need after the first few. i wouldnt doubt if there was a lot of copy paste in this book.

Any additional comments?

might be worth buying as a reference but not good for audio. Great information but but a book to listen to fully. listen to the first coupld of chapters then pick and choose which ones to listen to based on your issues. One thing that is nice is she does list what she will go over at the beginning of each chapter.

Helpful and thorough

This book was helpful and thorough. I enjoyed the pictures and resources! I’d definitely recommend.
My only critique is that I was wishing there were more personal stories. The book felt very formal. It would have been nice to connect to women’s experiences breastfeeding.
My critique of the audiobook in particular is that I was irritated by how all the URLs were read letter by letter. I didn’t find that helpful.

But overall, great book on breastfeeding!

Great information for 1st time mom or beyond

Although a few parts of the book &/or specific phrases are repetitive, the information is great. I'm a third time mom & I wish I had this book my first time round. Good book, great information, & pleasant voice.

Very usuful book

I nursed my oldest son up after two years and my youngest daughter is 10 months. Even though with breastfeeding experience, I bought this book to help me with some questions and encourage me to continue with breastfeeding. It is a very difficult phase, but also very pleasurable for women. I strongly recommend this book for moms who dream of breastfeeding and for those who want to continue breastfeeding. I also recommend for those fathers who want to be more than spectators in breastfeeding, helping moms in their difficulties.

informative but could have been shorter

I feel some topics were repeated. I had a hard time finishing this book. I think it would have been easier to finish as a physical book where I could have skimmed through some sections.
