This fast-paced action novel is set in a future where the world has been almost destroyed. Like the award-winning novel Freak the Mighty, this is Philbrick at his very best.

It's the story of an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz, who begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to the planet. In a world where most people are plugged into brain-drain entertainment systems, Spaz is the rare human being who can see life as it really is. When he meets an old man called Ryter, he begins to learn about Earth and its past. With Ryter as his companion, Spaz sets off an unlikely quest to save his dying sister - and in the process, perhaps the world.

the narrator really brought life to spaz as he went on his adventure with Ryder. I had this book paperback before and loved it but it was just better hearing his character made out in the way he was with these tones.

captivating and attention grabbing.

I read this book as a child and it left a marked effect on me and my later tastes in literature. The performance in this audio book is phenomenal and the book is just as good as I remember.

Nostalgic

When I first read this book, I was a sophomore and I was the only kid assigned to read this book for a project. Some other kids shared books but this one only had one copy. I loved it. Recently, I've been gathering books together so I can start a book club with my neices and nephews, since they're not likely to have a good childhood and I want to do what I can to help them learn positive things from adults and develop useful skills. I got this book because I remembered the impact it had on me and I want my family to experience it. Listening to this book was surreal. For those that don't know, your voice sounds different to you than it does to others due to the way sound travels through air versus how it does through bone, and the amazing Jeremy Davies' voice sounds just like mine does to myself when I read to others. I am not usually a review person but the impact this book and its audio version has had on me is life changing, and I can't wait to share it with my people.

My favorite book from school

when I was 10 years old I read The last book in the universe .
I felt so connected to the characters.
as a migrant child I struggled with the psychological pain and subliminal thought I had on my identity in a Anglo American state.
where I felt immense insecurity.
when I read this book I was able to identity my insecurity the resolve in the end of this book gave my 10 year old heart new life.
I am now enjoying this book with my own 10 year old.

from 10 to 30 this is still my favorite book

between the performance and the way the narration was written, Spaz felt like a very real person, though I personally couldn't relate to him much. made his story very compelling, though my only criticism is that there wasn't more... although the ambiguous ending is very well handled, in my opinion, and probably lends more to the story as a whole. I suppose I just like the universe.

Felt very real
