About this listen

A mission failed... A civilization on the edge of collapse... A dangerous alliance to save it...

Colonel Mitchell "Ares" Williams has never been one to accept failure. While the outcome on Liberty is a crushing setback to his and the Riggers' chances of salvaging the war, there's no time to waste on regret. After all, the mission wasn't a total loss, delivering an unexpected asset in the wake of their defeat - Liun Tio, aka the Knife, a notorious warlord and enemy of the Alliance whose deep-seated mistrust of artificial intelligence and control over what may be the largest free fleet in the galaxy have made him the most important man alive.

If humanity is going to have a chance to survive the Tetron onslaught, Ares and the Knife will need to find a way to work together. But can the two learn to trust one another enough to bring the power of their joint forces to bear against a common enemy? Or will their fragile alliance crumble beneath the weight of personal motives and divergent goals?

As Mitchell and the Riggers will soon discover, the knife's edge cuts both ways.

The narrator is one of my favorites and the character development is well written. The only downside is the time of the book.

great narration and holding audience attention

Character development is awesome. So is the story. Hope there’s a fourth book in the series.

I’m so wrapped up in this story, you bet I’m buying the rest of this series to see where it goes next!

Very engaging

Books 1 thru 3 are superb Military Scifi with a great plot, characters, and nonstop action. Jeffrey Kafer's performance was by far one of the best I have heard.

I had to listen to books 1 and 2 several times because I got distracted by my personal life daily routines. I didn't rate them because I was the problem, not the books, to be fair.

Impossible to rate a single book.

War is bad enough, but will humanoids ever change? Especially when war keeps happening over and over...and over?

Great Adventure with a Heart

This series is very well written, along with the character development. There are some characters that you love, then hate. Others you hate, then love.
This is definitely not milk toast sci-fi. This is a very emotional ride. There have been times when I had to say, ALL STOP!
BUT, I intend to listen or read the entire series. So well written. And I appreciate that the narrator doesn't try to imitate female voices. He does a proper job of narration. No corny voices required.

HEART WRENCHING, ALMOST TOO HARD TO LISTEN TO.. HAVE TO TAKE IN SPOONFULS

This book is a welcomed rebound from the partial letdown from Book 2. Here we have Mitch and Millie having to contend with the contentious and devious mastermind Tio, aka "The Knife", who Mitch barely saved during the loss of Liberty in book 2. Neither side trusts the motivations of the other, all the more made difficult considering the checkered history of each side. This is especially true between Tio and Millie for a variety of reasons, not the least of which having to do with Tio's murder of Millie's mother in a past third party assassination plot.

Tio takes what's left of Olympus and its waning crew to his secret base to restock their critically low military weapons and their diminished support supplies. While there, Mitch takes off on another mission and Millie and Tio slowly begin to come to begrudgingly ratchet down their animosity toward each other due to the most human of reasons, the serious illness and Tio's caring for his daughter. I even let my inner muse think that the two of them would actually find caring feelings for each other but destiny's cruel fate ultimately would have none of it.

Forbes continues to display his mastery of spinning a multi-novel story by introducing unforeseen plot twists and thrilling troop battle engagements along the way.

But, "Darn it!", Forbes ... MUST YOU?! And, you very well know what I mean!!!
