Publisher's summary
An energy expert shows why hydrogen can fight climate change and become the fuel of the future.
We’re constantly told that our planet is in crisis; that to save it, we must stop traveling, stop eating meat, even stop having children. But in The Hydrogen Revolution, Marco Alverà argues that we don’t need to upend our lives. We just need a new kind of fuel: hydrogen. From transportation and infrastructure to heating and electricity, hydrogen could eliminate fossil fuels, boost economic growth, and encourage global action on climate change. It could also solve the most bedeviling aspects of today’s renewable energy - from transporting and storing wind and solar energy and their vulnerability to weather changes to the inefficiency and limited utility of heavy, short-lasting batteries.
The Hydrogen Revolution isn’t just a manifesto for a powerful new technology. It’s a hopeful reminder that despite the gloomy headlines about the fate of our planet, there’s still an opportunity to turn things around.

Story
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Story
The grid is an accident of history and of culture, in no way intrinsic to how we produce, deliver and consume electrical power. Yet this is the system the United States ended up with, a jerry-built structure now so rickety and near collapse that a strong wind or a hot day can bring it to a grinding halt. The grid is now under threat from a new source: renewable and variable energy, which puts stress on its logics as much as its components.

The world is being shaken by the collision of energy, climate change, and the clashing power of nations in a time of global crisis. The "shale revolution" in oil and gas - made possible by fracking technology, but not without controversy - has transformed the American economy, ending the "era of shortage", but introducing a turbulent new era. Almost overnight, the United States has become the world's number one energy powerhouse - and, during the coronavirus crisis, brokered a tense truce between Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Griffith's plan can be summed up simply: Electrify everything. He explains exactly what it would take to transform our infrastructure, update our grid, and adapt our households to make this possible. Billionaires may contemplate escaping our worn-out planet on a private rocket ship to Mars, but the rest of us, Griffith says, will stay and fight for the future.

Fifteen years later, despite breakthroughs in batteries, electric vehicles, plant-based proteins, and solar and wind power, global warming continues to get worse. Its impact is all around us: droughts, floods, wildfires, the melting of the polar ice caps.

For decades environmentalists have told us that using fossil fuels is a self-destructive addiction that will destroy our planet. Yet by every measure of human well-being, from life expectancy to clean water to climate safety, life has been getting better and better. How can this be? The explanation is that we usually hear only one side of the story. We're taught to think only of the negatives of fossil fuels, their risks and side effects, but not their positives.

Story
In The Vanishing Face of Gaia, British scientist James Lovelock predicts global warming will lead to a Hot Epoch. Lovelock is best known for formulating the controversial Gaia theory in the 1970s, with Ruth Margulis of the University of Massachusetts, which states that organisms interact with and regulate Earth's surface and atmosphere. We ignore this interaction at our peril.

Story
For over a decade, philosopher and energy expert Alex Epstein has predicted that any negative impacts of fossil fuel use on our climate will be outweighed by the unique benefits of fossil fuels to human flourishing--including their unrivaled ability to provide low-cost, reliable energy to billions of people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people. And contrary to what we hear from media “experts” about today’s “renewable revolution” and “climate emergency,” reality has proven Epstein right.

Story
For most of human existence, people lived in a somewhat similar fashion. Everything that has been produced, from food and raw materials to clothing and other finished products, has been done either solely by hand or with some help of animal power. This was the same across the eras and throughout the world, no matter how advanced or backward the various civilizations were. Yet, our lives today couldn’t be more different.

And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.

Great book to start into hydrogen technology
This book explored many different avenues and aspects fo hydrogen technology for its day. it also showed the shear age of hydrogen and how it has been known for centuries but is just now being developed like it is. I want to commend the author on their research and knowledge of hydrogen as well as being able to display it in an averagely understandable manner. the only down side to this book was the utopian view of how hydrogen will save the world. It has immeasurable opportunities but they all will not come true at the same time. But we can dream i guess. Great book and would recommend to anyone trying to learn more about hydrogen.

Eye-opening
Great information source on hydrogen power, it’s various forms, and its huge potential. I have recently taken an interest in hydrogen and it’s potential. The publication is a wealth of knowledge and provides a good understanding of the current state of progress in different parts of the world. Very convincing plan is shared to transform the energy structure. I plan to acquire the written form as well. I’m very glad I found this publication.

Hydrogen fuel one of many energy sources of the future
Well written and makes you understand how close we are to making hydrogen energy cheaper. Don’t agree with using carbon taxes to push us there. Hydrogen will be one of the many sources of energy in our future. With all the talk of climate change we need the find many sources of clean energy and hydrogen is differently one major source.

Hopeful and realistic future
The author laid out his case chapter by chapter, so that I started out a skeptic and ended a believer. One of the more hopeful books for anyone who needs some good news that is also based in reality.

A Great marketing book
This guy will sell you a homestead in a swamp. Reality is replaced by possible, could, might, should as well as subsidies, taxes and credits. For a dose of reality one should read any of the books by Vaclav Smil that have true scientific basis. If we repeat a lie often enough, we still can’t make it true. Cheap renewables have resulted in German paying 4 time higher electricity rates than the US and those same renewables raise my electricity rates every time there is a legislative mandate to increase their use. One should remember that the subsides and supports from the government come from taxes taken from the citizens.

Dreaming of a great future, but lacking of fundamental physics, thermodynamics, chemistry knowledge, a bit of disappointment .
Marco has a vision and he shares very good points on how to (when we get there) make economical and financial sense of the opportunity to transition into hydrogen as a main fuel.
The business case, and the strategies are all sound , however, the very first layer of technical boundaries are obviously shrouded on his knowledge.
All things considered, I do support Marcos vision
