About this listen
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home. Thanks to Martin Sheen’s performance and the voices of ordinary Americans throughout this Audible Original, listeners can feel what life was like during a disruptive and uncertain period of American history. Martha Little is the Executive Producer, and Dan Gediman is the series producer of The Home Front.
Note: The Home Front contains mature and sensitive themes.

Story
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Educational and very well done
I did not expect to like this series, but it is so well researched and presented that it overcame my reservations in the first of the 16 episodes. The most fascinating aspect is hearing the views in their voice of the people who were there.at the time. The Home Front is a very worthwhile listen. I disagree with the judgment of two of the reviewers that this audio book is leftist propaganda.

Wow I felt like I was there!
I loved Martin Sheen's narration and I love the way this story took us deep into what it was like to be part of the "greatest generation" and the realization that there were some not so "Great" things about the Greatest Generation that are oft overlooked because of the greater story of the victory ! I always wanted my grandfather to tell me about what it was like because he has been on a ship that was torpedoed in the Pacidic but he wouldn't ever open up . My grandmother eventually wrote me a beautiful letter about their love story and life during war time that i shall always cherish.
She told me my grandfather lost a lot of friends and that's why he held it in and never talked about it .....
This book took me back to love with my grandfolks as if I were there with them and I feel blessed to have listened to this.... makes me happy I've had my audible membership for so long .

A piece of American history
Thank yoü Audile, for an inside look at WWII. I listened intently to hear things that impacted my parents and their families and eventually me.
The narration was well done. The historical recordings really brought this to life!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Great detail
This book really does a good job at covering the different aspects of life during WWII. Everything from social life, segregation, economical shift etc. Very very informative and I highly recommend it. The narrator did a good job and I loved the recordings they had of actual civilians and veterans of the war era.

Not to be missed!
This is a gem of an audio book. This is the best stateside description of life during WWII I have ever heard/red, and I learned so much about my country's history during that very terrible time. There are very clear and direct discussions of heartbreaking subjects such as racism and post traumatic stress -- and also encouraging matters such as women's expanding role in the workplace and humanity's ability to forgive. Martin Sheen's narration is flawless and compelling -- I couldn't stop listening, and I will listen to it again.
