Publisher's summary

A short and sweet audio novella that’ll leave listeners wanting second helpings, You Can Thank Me Later follows an unforgettable family over the course of three Thanksgivings.

When the Dickenson clan sits down for Thanksgiving dinner in 2016, it is the last holiday when their tight-knit family will ever be the same. Oldest brother Pete and his wife are expecting their first child. Youngest sibling Sophie is too busy running her restaurant, The Little Plum, to bother with any kind of social life. And middle child Charlie’s happy, uncomplicated life as a Midwestern science professor is upended when his wife Annette is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Knowing this will be her last Thanksgiving, Annette asks Sophie to look after Charlie after she’s gone. Which would be a lot easier if Charlie didn’t show up with an insufferable new girlfriend at the next holiday meal.

From the best-selling author of The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, this heartwarming novella embraces the spirit and gratitude of the holiday, and shows how a family’s love can endure anything.

What We Bring to the Table

This short listen will hit home to a lot of families who simultaneously look forward to and dread the holidays, which tend to fill us with memories, expectations and fear. For the three siblings in this story, Pete, Charlie, and Sophie who gathered each year at the youngest sibling’s (Sophie’s) restaurant for Thanksgiving, big changes were in store. Their parents who had been hoping for grandchildren, were finally going to have that first grandbaby when Pete and his wife, announce they are expecting. Charlie, the middle child, a college professor, and wife, Annette, who just happens to be Sophie’s best friend, come bringing sad news: Annette’s cancer has returned. And Sophie, the baby of the family, owner of The Little Plum Restaurant, where they always have Thanksgiving Dinner together, again brings her token date, a fellow the family sees once . . . and no more. When Annette makes Sophie promise to look after Charlie after she’s gone and to make sure he is not alone, Sophie doesn’t truly understand what that promise entails. Over the span of the following two years, changes ripple through the family, causing all three of the siblings to come to terms with their evolving relationships. An excellent, thoughtfully written listen for the holidays.

Happy Ending

I don't understand why these Amazon originals are all so short. I want to hear about the next Thanksgiving, and the one after that, and ....

A little bit corny

It's a sweet story but kind of corny and predictable. Reminds me of the Hallmark channel.

Excellent narration.

A great story of love, loss & family

This was an even better read than I’d expected. The narrator does a terrific job of narrating a story that is both touching, and incredibly real. I loved these characters and every minute spent listening to this.

Six stars

I’d give this 6 stars if I could. Loved everything about it - story and narration.

Fortgang does just enough to differentiate the dozen or so voices, and makes you feel like you’re really listening to the protagonist tell you the story.

Harms’ content is entertaining throughout, with just the right amounts of humor and poignancy. The characters feel real, and so do the issues they’re dealing with. Not a hint of melodrama.

Judged a book by its cover; I got more than I expected.

This was my first Audible Original .... I didn’t really know what to expect. The description was enough to catch my interest, but the story was more than I expected. The layout was great well throughout and the flow was not confusing. I enjoyed the way the writer added some humor into a story that had me in tears at some parts. I enjoyed the book and the narration made it the book come to life. Great job.
