What is Western Civilization? According to Professor Noble, it is "much more than human and political geography," encompassing myriad forms of political and institutional structures - from monarchies to participatory republics - and its own traditions of political discourse. It involves choices about who gets to participate in any given society and the ways in which societies have resolved the tension between individual self-interest and the common good.

You might know that Greek gods interfered on both sides of the Trojan War, but did you know that Hindu gods fought alongside both the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata? In the same way the ancient Egyptians worshiped Ra above all else, did you know that the monkey-god, Hanuman, gained his wisdom from the sun? Did you know that Krishna and Hercules are often linked to a past that includes Alexander the Great's conquests? And just as Noah had his ark, one of Lord Vishnu's avatars had a similar tale for Hinduism.

Story
A Brief History of America provides an overview of the modern history of the United States of America through the lens of the two-party political system. It explores the good, the bad, the right, and the wrong of one of the modern world's greatest superpowers. In the aftermath of the 2020 election, the world bore witness to the noxious political atmosphere in the United States and the deep divisions between its citizens. To those living in the present day, it would seem like American society is hurtling down a path of increasing incivility and polarization.

As a modern nation with deeply ancient roots, England has undoubtedly impacted the world around it. But how much of England is English? From the earliest Anglo-Saxon monarchs to the Windsor family, monarchs with foreign origins have occupied the throne. Much like its language, England has been shaped by the cultures that came to the island and the cultures around the world it attempted to overtake. In A Brief History of England, you will step back into the past to uncover the underpinnings of English civilization’s unique resiliency.

I love how concise this historical overview was. I enjoy history without all the minute facts that make it interminable, and this audiobook was perfect for that. Really good writing, and I love having a broad overview of an entire country and what makes it Japan today. Highly recommended!

Must listen to this before traveling to Japan!
I'm getting ready for my first trip to Japan and downloaded this little gem. This was the perfect book to learn about the history of Japan in a nutshell. As a martial arts practitioner it was cool to learn about the rise of the samurai and their role in society. This book also has random tidbits of information at the end of the book that I loved- I had no idea that Japan has the most vending machines in the world. Its getting me excited for my trip! I would highly recommend this to anyone getting ready to travel to Japan or anyone who wants to expand their mind and learn about Japan.
