Philip K. Dick
About this listen
Imagine if you will, you have been underground during the day, and when you come up the world has changed. There is a man hanging from a telephone pole right on Main Street, and no one seems to notice or if they do, they don't indeed care. Life appears otherwise normal, but is it? Who do you tell? Who can you tell? Or is anything really wrong? Philip K. Dick takes us into that nightmare where we run and things seen so real, but perhaps you are the one that is confused.

Story
UN forces have retreated to a moon base in the aftermath of early Soviet victories in a nuclear conflict. In response, the UN forces developed special robots, called "Claws", which feature spinning blades and rudimentary artificial intelligence. Six years later, the Soviet leadership asks for negotiations to end the war. A UN officer travels back to earth to discover that not only have the Claws learned to replicate themselves, they have also created a much deadlier cyborg that threatens humanity itself.

Story
Though perhaps most famous as a novelist, Philip K. Dick wrote more than 100 short stories over the course of his career, each as mind-bending and genre-defining as his longer works. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams collects 10 of the best. In "Autofac," Dick shows us one of the earliest examples (and warnings) in science fiction of self-replicating machines. "Exhibit Piece" and "The Commuter" feature Dick exploring one of his favorite themes: the shifting nature of reality and whether it is even possible to perceive the world as it truly exists.

During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. Story
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

PKD Makes Use of Some Great Twists
Any additional comments?
This was a terrific short story by Dick.
It had me hooked right off the bat and continued to have me glued right up until the ending.
Great narration job by Vendeitti as well.
Grab this one if you are ANY sort of fan of sci/fi.

Nice story but problematic narration.
Any additional comments?
Mr Mike Vendetti reads too fast and sometimes swallows word. If I didn't have the textual matter in front of me, I wouldn't understand some of the words and wouldn't be able to follow the story.

For P. K. Dick fans . . . 😱
I like short stories . . . They are much more difficult to craft well than longer works -- so many simply don't work.
This works reasonably well. I admit I am a fan of Dick.
My best advice ? Grab any number of well edited short story anthologies. You'll admire what some of these authors can do . . . 😱

Entertaining short story with plenty of surprises.
I’ve been familiar with Philip K Dick through the TV series based on his Man in the High Castle book. The Hanging Stranger is my first experience listening to one of his short stories. Based on how much I enjoyed this story it won’t be my last. Sure, it’s a short story, but it doesn’t suffer from the length. The story kept me engaged from the beginning to the end and for most of the story I was thinking it would end much differently than it did. I enjoyed the story so much I listened to it twice. I listened to two different versions of this story narrated by different narrators, Scott Miller, and Mike Vendetti. Both did excellent jobs delivering the story.
