About this listen

New York Times best seller Lincoln Child returns with a riveting new thriller featuring the charismatic and quirky Professor Jeremy Logan, renowned investigator of the strange and the inexplicable, as he uncovers a long-lost secret experiment only rumored to have existed.

Jeremy Logan (The Third Gate, Deep Storm) is an "enigmalogist" - an investigator who specializes in analyzing phenomena that have no obvious explanation. In this newest novel, Logan finds himself on the storied coastline of Newport, Rhode Island, where he has been retained by Lux, one of the oldest and most respected think tanks in America. Just days earlier, a series of frightening events took place in the sprawling seaside mansion that houses the organization. One of its most distinguished doctors began acting erratically - violently attacking an assistant in the mansion's opulent library and, moments later, killing himself in a truly shocking fashion. Terrified by the incident and the bizarre evidence left behind, the group hires Logan to investigate - discreetly - what drove this erudite man to madness.

His work leads him to an unexpected find. In a long-dormant wing of the estate, Logan uncovers an ingeniously hidden secret room, concealed and apparently untouched for decades. The room is a time capsule, filled with eerie and obscure scientific equipment that points to a top-secret project long thought destroyed, known only as "Project S." Ultimately the truth of what Project S was...and what has happened in that room...will put Logan in the path of a completely unexpected danger.

One of his most thrilling novels to date, The Forgotten Room is replete with veiled, fascinating history and all the exhilarating action and science that are the hallmarks of a Lincoln Child blockbuster.

Bleh. Hard time finishing.

First, I would like to point out, this is not a stand alone novel. In fact, its 4th in the series. Would have been nice for Audible to indicate this. I have no intention of listening to the others. The book never picked up pace. The narration was ok, but voice didn't seem to suit the characters. In the end, i cannot put my finger on it, but the story just seemed bland....and ridiculous. Not worth the credit.

Abit derivative, but in the normal Child manner

Would you try another book from Lincoln Child and/or Johnathan McClain?

Of course. The narrator is no RC Bray or Mr. Brick, but he does a solid job here. As for Lincoln, well, we all know what we will get from him. Well researched action.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I am not skillful in such things to offer suggestions, but some more conspiracy is always entertaining.

What about Johnathan McClain’s performance did you like?

Good accents, solid and consistent.

Did The Forgotten Room inspire you to do anything?

Read more of this sort of offering.

Any additional comments?

Solid, nothing wild but good story well performed. Entertaining and amusing. Recommended.

If you like Preston/Child books you will like this

All in all a good book. I've always been a fan of both Douglas Preston and Lincoln child both individually and together. This book by Child did not disappoint

Another good listen from Lincoln Child

The book was entertaining, well narrated and fast paced. I have enjoyed all of his work both as sole author and with Doug Preston.

Reminiscent of Hammond Innes

Would you consider the audio edition of The Forgotten Room to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

No the plot is engaging but is not a thriller in the sense of pace or suspense.

Which character – as performed by Johnathan McClain – was your favorite?

McClain is one of the best male performers for doing female voices. It would be interesting to hear how many individual women he could voice. There were three major female characters in this book and he did them all well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The book was not really a binge-listening book, but if, for example, I were on a long flight somewhere I think I could have listened in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

Lincoln Child's writing style reminds me of Hammond Innes, who wrote prolifically for many years. Child's protagonists are more academic types while those of Innes tend to be rugged individualists, and Innes might scoff at the story line, but the styles share a similar technique and atmosphere.

Worth a read

I enjoyed the book. It produced some visuals for me that have stuck, so that makes it worth the read right there. Otherwise, it is a little meh, but I like Lincoln's work generally. This is nothing like a Pendergast book, but so what!

Great Read

I have not read Child in years. Sometimes when you are as dedicated to a series as I was with Pendergast, it gets kind of tried. So Child and I had a parting of the ways. I can say it is with much delight that I can say that I LOVED this book. I wish he had a series with Jeremy Logan.

Imagine being part of a think tank and you have an expertise in the unexplained. Your peers feel disdained and sullied by your area of study. For Logan that is what it is. It does not help that he will sells his reputation for money, but he does have a talent.

You know the premise of the book if you read the summary. What you don't know is with the mystery of the occult you have the machinations of greedy men and the pretentious of an institution, stuck up on its own reputation. Logan declares he is not a detective but that is exactly the skills he uses to solve the mystery of the forgotten room.

Though some reviews do not like the details of the sciences I found that very satisfying. It enable me to accept the premise of the book. As intelligent as Logan is he has a frailty surrounding his study and his life. Much of the conflict is with the vehemence of the institute to keep things low key and the need to solve the mystery.

I always find it amusing when a person is hired to solve a mystery, but is severely restricted to areas to investigate. The employer can always unequivocally state the restriction does not have anything to do with the mystery. So Logan works around and through the restrictions and that is the story. If you are tied of Pendergast but you enjoy Child this is an enjoyable change.

Secrets unearthed can lead to deadly endings.
Oh how foolish is man to think that he can create something, which cannot be twisted to harm man.
