Publisher's summary

In the rugged wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, twelve-year-old Leif's world is shattered when his father dies in a tragic logging accident. But as Leif struggles to bring his father's body out of the dense forest, he is burdened with a devastating truth that will change everything.

Set against the backdrop of a small mining town in the 1970s, The Faller is a poignant coming-of-age story that explores the weight of family secrets, the complexity of grief, and the resilience of the human spirit. As Leif grapples with loss, he must confront hard truths about his family and find the strength to forge his own path forward.

With lyrical prose and unforgettable characters, Michael Demaray's debut novella is a powerful meditation on the bonds that tie us together and the painful realities that tear us apart.

The Faller is a haunting tale of a boy forced to become a man too soon, learning that sometimes the heaviest burdens we carry are the ones we can't put down.

Powerful Coming of Age

Set in the 1970s, this audiobook is about Lief, a resident of a small mining town struggling to accept his father's death, his family's secrets, and his own strength to move forward. He learns quickly that there are some things we can’t hand off or let go of.

The author, Michael Demaray, captures the struggle of children who are forced to grow up quickly and take on adult responsibilities too soon. His words are powerful, as are the images of Lief, who must face manhood at a young age, alone, and burdened by economic hardship revealed. Demaray’s dialogue vividly and authentically captures Leif’s emotional anguish. Though the 1970s were a different era, the issues remain relatable today. Demaray effectively conveys this through the plot, dialogue, and characters. His character development is strong and well-executed. The narrative is flawless!

The narrator, Ken Kowalik delivers a solid performance as he engages the audience through careful pacing, building suspense and then slowing down to allow the listener to reflect. He keenly understands each character and theme, bringing each aspect of the story to life. He speaks clearly and smoothly.

This is a short audiobook that will capture the hearts of each listener fully immersing them. For me, this story reminded me of my youth in the 1970s bringing back tender memories and painful ones as well. This is a book for all ages. I highly recommend this book!
