Story
It’s been a week without power. No phones. No computers. Nothing. Whatever shred of humanity is left in people is slowly dwindling away. Gangs are forming, people are starving, and the whole country is in a free-for-all. Accompanied by his neighbor, Nelson, Mike leaves Pittsburgh and heads to his family’s cabin in Ohio. For Mike, the only thing worse than not making it to the cabin is the fear of his family not being there when he does.

Romance-y.
This was fun, but not the usual EMP-style, despite being advertised as an EMP read. It is actually a romance novel with a side of ‘EMP’, if that makes sense. Basically the world ended a few decades ago, and people have adapted as best they can. There’s a small bit of drama as a result of the whole ‘lawless’ vibe but, this book is basically dedicated to the romance, complete with some popular tropes:
Possessive ‘touch her and d!3’ male lead.
Forced proximity.
Misunderstanding trope.
Miscommunication trope.
Young adult (male lead is 17).
Disability representation (female lead is vision-impaired).
That said, it was a fun read, most of the time. The pace could be a bit faster, but it worked. If you read the rest of the books in this series and were left wanting more, you’ll probably love this.
Overall:
3 stars.
Audio:
Overall sound quality has some issues, it’s not perfectly crisp and clear, but sounds okay. The narrator did a great job, except for the way he portrayed the male lead. (He’s described as a 17-year-old kid and the voice used for him didn’t really fit.)

Good portrayal of disability
N.B. I received a free copy of this book via freeaudiobookcodes.com. This is book 7 in the series. This is definitely the best of the series out of the ones I've tackled so far. The others were enjoyable, if a bit repetitive. This one jumps ~30 years in comparison to the others I've read in the series. I think that made it easier to find new ground for the author, though some of the tropes are still there. I also enjoyed the inclusion of a disabled main character and the mental struggles both from the side of the disabled person and the person loving the disabled person (as someone with a disability who loves someone else with one, I could certainly identify with both sides and see similarities from my own life).
