About this listen

"Sherlock Holmes Disappears, Police Suspect Famed Detective in Kidnapping and Murder" reads a New York headline. So begins the fifth mystery in Larry Millett’s series.

A letter, written in a secret cipher he recognizes all too well, reveals that an old foe of Holmes - a murderer he once captured after an incredible duel of wits - is back, has kidnapped his previous victim’s widow, and is now impersonating Holmes himself. Holmes must once again match wits with a particularly cunning adversary, one whose hatred of Holmes has seemingly become the killer’s single greatest obsession.

Chasing the kidnapper from London to New York to Chicago, Holmes and Watson race to keep up. Every move Holmes makes is expected; every trap proves elusive. Only with the assistance of his American cohort, the saloonkeeper Shadwell Rafferty, can Holmes hope to settle the score once and for all - or be framed for the crime himself.

Simply Wonderful!

Mr. Millett's Minnesota Sherlock Holmes series is wonderful. He has taken an iconic figure and taken him to a new place, if not a new time. I am usually skeptical of such adjunct stories but his work. I also think he is a closet railroad historian which for me makes these story even more fun. Thank you for a great read.

GREAT! Novel! Absolutely Worth a read by Holmes Fans

If you are a Sherlock Holmes Fan, this book is definitely worth your attention. Not only is it true to style, it is a grand plot that keeps you interested and rewarded for your interest.

I recommend you read all of Mr Millet’s Holmes novels. Although, if possible, read them in order. Even if you don’t though, as I have not, they are still exceptional.

The narration is also first rate. All characters have varied and consistent voices throughout all the novels and add much to the enjoyment of the story.

Great story

Really enjoyed the book and the series but the characterization of Watson is too much. He is almost stupid in his portrayal asking questions with obvious answers and having no understanding of solving crimes. For a sidekick who has been with Holmes for years it was disappointing. Holmes would do better with Rafferty going forward. But regardless, great and captivating story.

Best one yet...

Best book so far in the Minnesota series. Make sure to listen to the previous books in the series, as there are many characters that tie in to the storyline for this one.

A great series

if you enjoy Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock, you will enjoy this. I think there's four books I listen to them and rap into session and the characters are solid storyline ties backwards and forwards and very interesting ways.

A great addition to the corpus

This is a long listen and I was skeptical at first. The narrative style is of intertwined stories from the various characters' viewpoints and this of course adds to length. The story is wide ranging from England to New York and then to Chicago and with a nefarious plot just as grand. Good action, tense confrontations, and enough developments to keep the story moving and interesting. The ordinance was good but again, I have to admit to an early negative bias - the narrative seemed too soft and measured. However, as the story proceeds, that easy narration provided a nice counterpoint to the relative noise caused by the other characters.

This is a good listen.

Recommended.
