About this listen
A SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL AND KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
Calvin knows how to pass for white. He's done it plenty of times before. For his friends in Chicago, when they wanted food but weren't allowed in a restaurant. For work, when he and his dad would travel for the Green Book.
This is different.
After a tragedy in Chicago forces the family to flee, they resettle in an idyllic all-white suburban town in search of a better life. Calvin's father wants everyone to embrace their new white lifestyles, but it's easier said than done. Hiding your true self is exhausting -- which leads Calvin across town where he can make friends who know all of him...and spend more time with his new crush, Lily. But when Calvin starts unraveling dark secrets about the white town and its inhabitants, passing starts to feel even more suffocating--and dangerous--than he could have imagined.
Expertly weaving together real historical events with important reflections on being Black in America, acclaimed author Kim Johnson powerfully connects readers to the experience of being forced to live a life-threatening lie or embrace an equally deadly truth.©2024 Kim Johnson (P)2024 Listening Library

Critic reviews
"This is a solid portrait of a shameful time in U.S. history as well as a dynamic narrative portraying the impacts on everyday people."—Booklist
"Kim Johnson’s THE COLOR OF A LIE is the triumphant story of one young man’s longing to unleash his true self in a world that refuses to see beyond the color of his skin. This book is an indictment of our past, a caution for our present, and the hope for the shared humanity of our American future."—Sharon Cameron, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Light in Hidden Places
"Heart-pounding. Gut-wrenching. A fast-paced historical thriller both grappling with the horror of segregated America and celebrating the bravery of everyday citizens fighting for a better world–an absolute must for every bookshelf."—Andrew Joseph White, New York Times Bestselling and award-winning Author of The Spirit Bares Its Teeth and Hell Followed With Us

Eighteen-year-old Addie Blackwood regrets nothing more than one horrible, mistake-filled night last summer. Hours after she hurled the worst words she could think of at her sister, Fiona was found dead at the bottom of a ravine. The police ruled her death an accident, but Addie’s never bought it. Her ballet-prodigy sister didn’t slip and fall; she was pushed. And Addie’s number one suspect: Thatcher Montgomery, the rich kid down the street who always had a thing for Fiona. Juliette doesn't hate Priya Pendley. At least, not in the way teen movies say she should hate the hot popular girl. They don't do cat fights, love triangles, or betrayal. To survive their intertwined small town lives, they’ve agreed to a truce. They complete group projects without fighting, never gossip to mutual friends, and stand on opposite sides of photos so it’s easy to crop each other out. Priya seems to have everything during the school year—social media stardom, the handsome track captain boyfriend, and millions of adoring fans—and Juliette is at peace with that.

Since Grandpa died, Dally’s days are dull and restricted. She’s eleven and a half years old, and her exacting single mother is already preparing her to take over the family business. Starved for adventure and release, Dally rescues a mysterious envelope from her mother’s clutches, an envelope Grandpa had earmarked for her. The map she finds inside leads straight to an ancient vault, a library of secrets where each book is a portal to a precise moment in time. As Dally “checks out” adventure after adventure she begins to dive deep into her family’s hidden history.

Amazing.
This book is amazing. 10/10 when I wasn’t listening to this book I missed it like I was waiting on a new season of a tv series. I love this book. I love the education in it. I love the history. I love the characters.

...nothing short of masterful!
The way Johnson seamlessly weaves together themes of race, identity, and social justice is nothing short of masterful. Her writing is incredibly evocative and emotional, pulling the reader into the heart of Calvin's struggle to navigate his dual identity in a world that wants to force him to choose.

Strength of the young
This first person story of young kids fighting for the right to life and freedom, to a good education and a decent place to live was both humbling and eye-opening. Each character was believable, even as their own perspectives transformed. The narrator did an amazing job on all the voices.
