About this listen
In 1955, a Black family passes for white and moves to a “Whites Only” town in the suburbs. Caught between two worlds, a teen boy puts his family at risk as he uncovers racist secrets about his suburb. A new social justice thriller from the acclaimed author of This Is My America!
Calvin knows how to pass for white. He's done it plenty of times before. For his friends in Chicago, when they wanted food but weren't allowed in a restaurant. For work, when he and his dad would travel for the Green Book.
This is different.
After a tragedy in Chicago forces the family to flee, they resettle in an idyllic all-white suburban town in search of a better life. Calvin's father wants everyone to embrace their new white lifestyles, but it's easier said than done. Hiding your true self is exhausting—which leads Calvin across town where he can make friends who know all of him...and spend more time with his new crush, Lily. But when Calvin starts unraveling dark secrets about the white town and its inhabitants, passing starts to feel even more suffocating—and dangerous—than he could have imagined.
Expertly weaving together real historical events with important reflections on being Black in America, acclaimed author Kim Johnson powerfully connects listeners to the experience of being forced to live a life-threatening lie or embrace an equally deadly truth.

Twenty-four months ago: Neon gets chased by a dog all around the parking lot of a church. Not his finest moment. And definitely one he would have loved to forget if it weren’t for the dog’s owner: Aria. Dressed in sweats, a t-shirt, hair in a ponytail. Aria. Way more than fine. Twenty-four weeks ago: Neon’s dad insists on talking to him about tenderness and intimacy. Neon and Aria are definitely in love, and while they haven’t taken that next big step…yet, they’ve starting talking about…that.

Story
In this ingenious, sweeping novel, Phillip B. Williams introduces us to an enigmatic woman named Saint, a fearsome conjurer who, in the 1830s, annihilates plantations all over Arkansas to rescue the people enslaved there. She brings those she has freed to a haven of her own creation: a town just north of St. Louis, magically concealed from outsiders, named Ours. It is in this miraculous place that Saint’s grand experiment—a truly secluded community where her people may flourish—takes root.

"This is a solid portrait of a shameful time in U.S. history as well as a dynamic narrative portraying the impacts on everyday people."—Booklist
"Kim Johnson’s THE COLOR OF A LIE is the triumphant story of one young man’s longing to unleash his true self in a world that refuses to see beyond the color of his skin. This book is an indictment of our past, a caution for our present, and the hope for the shared humanity of our American future."—Sharon Cameron, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Light in Hidden Places
"Heart-pounding. Gut-wrenching. A fast-paced historical thriller both grappling with the horror of segregated America and celebrating the bravery of everyday citizens fighting for a better world–an absolute must for every bookshelf."—Andrew Joseph White, New York Times Bestselling and award-winning Author of The Spirit Bares Its Teeth and Hell Followed With Us

The fire wasn’t Marlowe Wexler’s fault. Dates should be hot, but not hot enough to warrant literal firefighters. Akilah, the girl Marlowe has been in love with for years, will never go out with her again. No one dates an accidental arsonist. With her house-sitting career up in flames, it seems the universe owes Marlowe a new summer job, and that’s how she ends up at Morning House, a mansion built on an island in the 1920s and abandoned shortly thereafter. It’s easy enough, giving tours. Low risk of fire. High chance of getting bored talking about stained glass and nut cutlets and Prohibition.

She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary, and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

Amazing.
This book is amazing. 10/10 when I wasn’t listening to this book I missed it like I was waiting on a new season of a tv series. I love this book. I love the education in it. I love the history. I love the characters.

...nothing short of masterful!
The way Johnson seamlessly weaves together themes of race, identity, and social justice is nothing short of masterful. Her writing is incredibly evocative and emotional, pulling the reader into the heart of Calvin's struggle to navigate his dual identity in a world that wants to force him to choose.

Strength of the young
This first person story of young kids fighting for the right to life and freedom, to a good education and a decent place to live was both humbling and eye-opening. Each character was believable, even as their own perspectives transformed. The narrator did an amazing job on all the voices.
