Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Story
To the uninitiated, Savannah shows only her bright face and genteel manner. Those who know her well, though, can see beyond her colonial trappings and small-city charm to a world where witchcraft is respected, Hoodoo is feared, and spirits linger. Mercy Taylor is all too familiar with the supernatural side of Savannah, being a member of the most powerful family of witches in the South. Despite being powerless herself, of course. Having grown up without magic of her own, in the shadow of her talented and charismatic twin sister, Mercy has always thought herself content.

Story
"I am alone in the dark, turning the world around in my head as I struggle through another bout of insomnia, another white night in the great American wilderness." So begins Paul Auster's brilliant, devastating tale about the many realities we inhabit as wars flame all around us. Seventy-two-year-old August Brill is recovering from a car accident in his daughter's house in Vermont. When sleep refuses to come, he lies in bed and tells himself stories, struggling to push back thoughts about things he would prefer to forget—his wife's recent death and the murder of his granddaughter's boyfriend.

A deliciously twisted paranormal thriller
Wow! This 1.5-hour short story packs a serious punch! In the first few minutes, I had thought that the writing style and narration seemed a bit unpolished, but they both quickly improved to near perfection. At twenty minutes, I had become thoroughly immersed and couldn’t stop listening. The plot was wonderfully twisty, and the characters were multi-dimensional. I am surprised at how much ground the story covered in only 1.5 hours while still being a very satisfyingly complete story.
The narrator gave a wonderful performance. She effectively made different voices for the various characters. She also conveyed emotions very well and had perfect pacing to enhance the suspense.
I heartily recommend this audiobook to any adults who like haunted house movies or supernatural thrillers. I particularly think that fans of Anne Rice would love this. I requested and received a free copy from the author, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Exceptional!
I loved this book! It was a great story to follow that left you on the edge of your seat. I wanted to know what would happen next the whole time! The narrator was amazing as well! There was such emotion and feeling in all the characters voices! I don't know how she changed every single characters voice but you knew exactly who was talking when this narrator read because of the different voices. I loved loved loved this book!

Wasn’t a wast of time
For only a little over an hour book it was not bad. It ended and I Knew what the future would hold for the characters which I love. The issue is the book could have been so much more. There was so many opportunities to make this story explode. Again for a short story I liked it.

short, enjoyable, easy read
While the narrator left a lot to be desired, I liked the story itself. I’m going to need another listen or two to exactly understand what happened but I’m looking forward to those listens. Easy book to read, I’m just not always up to speed on time/ghost things.
