About this listen

From the award-winning author of The Memory Painter comes a sweeping and suspenseful tale of fate and fortune.

Semele Cavnow appraises antiquities for an exclusive Manhattan auction house, specializing in deciphering ancient texts. And when she discovers a manuscript written in the time of Cleopatra, she knows it will be the find of her career. Its author tells the story of a priceless tarot deck, now lost to history.

But as Semele delves further, she realizes the manuscript is more than it seems. Both a memoir and a prophecy, it appears to be the work of a powerful seer, describing devastating wars and natural disasters in detail thousands of years before they occurred. The more she reads, the more the manuscript begins to affect Semele's entire life. But what happened to the cards?

As the mystery of her connection to it deepens, Semele can't shake the feeling that she's being followed. Only one person can help her make sense of it all: her client, Theo Brossard. Yet Theo is arrogant and elusive, concealing secrets of his own, and there's more to Semele's desire to speak with him than she would like to admit. Can Semele even trust him?

The auction date is swiftly approaching, and someone wants to interfere - someone who knows the cards exist, and that the Brossard manuscript is tied to her. Semele realizes it's up to her to stop them: the manuscript holds the key to a 2000-year-old secret, a secret someone will do anything to possess.

A Little Confusing, But Overall a Good Read

I enjoyed this book despite the fact that I didn’t love the main character, Semele. She struck me as a little “flat” and in need of more fleshing out. It was annoying to me as the main character began putting pieces of the transcripts and scrolls together that she was oblivious for so long to the similarities and connections to her own life. It was about halfway through the book that she began to even get a clue about her past and about three-quarters of the way through the story before she began to accept her gifts (she didn’t really use them other than occasional strange foreshadowing feelings, premonitions and occasional dejavu, which more often than not, Semele brushed off as nothing, attributing them to lack of sleep, jet lag, the need for coffee…).

The story flips back and forth between the current time (Semele’s time) and Iona’s time (the Seer, the past). I thoroughly enjoyed the narrators’ reading the “past” — EXCELLENT.

There are a LOT of characters to keep track of. I am therefore starting this book over again now that I understand it better (I just finished the book 15-minutes ago).

I was a little disappointed in the ending, but I enjoyed this book enough to go back and read it again for a better understanding of the historic timelines (which are well-done — you don’t feel like you are back in your high school history class) and the order in which things were happening to the main characters and why.

Overall, I recommend this book.

Very Engaging Story

I find myself still thinking about this story even a week after I finished it. I wish there were more stories to follow up with the historical timelines, because I found those so interesting, but overall the book was very enjoyable and I highly recommend it. The narration is well done.

Not much to say when an audiobook is this good. Narrator is great, story is good, and I wished it would never end.
