Publisher's summary

From Antoinette Corvo, author of Dirges in the Dark and The Ivory Tower, comes The Cat that Caught the Canary – a hard-hitting drama.

When an unloved child loses her only friend, she finds the courage to leave home and reinvent herself as Pearl Lancaster. Innocent and naïve, Pearl’s quest to become a theatre star puts her at the mercy of abusive teachers and predatory cult members.

This is the story of one girl’s rise to fame and the desperate lengths she will go to in order to stay in the spotlight. Blood will be shed, tears will fall, but the show must go on.

What in the world did I just listen to????

This was one of the strangest stories I've listened to yet. I kept hoping it would get better, but it didn't. Strange plot and even stranger characters. Was it a book about a cult, serial killer, psycho, or what? I think maybe it was too many ideas thrown into one story. Just absolutely not for me.

Interesting

I find runaway stories fun and all that jazz. Throw in a cult, and the outcome is usually very interesting. This story is very much that. I didn't get a good feel for Pearl. I can't say that I ever really cared for her, and the ending proved I was correct in that. My biggest problem with the story is that time seemed to jump around a bit. For example, Pearl is pregnant and first taken in by the people she hears chanting at night, then the next chapter it was months later. Then I think it was later even after that she figured out they were a cult. So much happened for this book to have been 160 pages. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. A storyline about a ballerina was original. So that's a first for me. A ballet story
