About this listen

An exquisite WWII novel illuminating the strength of three women in occupied Paris, for fans of The Nightingale, The Alice Network, and The Lost Girls of Paris.

"A truly outstanding novel...reminds us of the power of love, hope and courage." (Heather Morris, number-one best-selling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz)

Paris, 1944

Celebrated singer Genevieve Dumont is both a star and a smokescreen. An unwilling darling of the Nazis, the chanteuse’s position of privilege allows her to go undetected as an ally to the resistance.

When her estranged mother, Lillian de Rocheford, is captured by Nazis, Genevieve knows it won’t be long before the Gestapo succeeds in torturing information out of Lillian that will derail the upcoming allied invasion. The resistance movement is tasked with silencing her by any means necessary - including assassination. But Genevieve refuses to let her mother become yet one more victim of the war. Reuniting with her long-lost sister, she must find a way to navigate the perilous cross-currents of Occupied France undetected - and in time to save Lillian’s life.

In this heart-wrenching novel, best-selling author Karen Robards showcases the extraordinary lengths one goes to save their family from a German prison. A web of spies, the resistance, and a vivid portrayal of Paris in wartime.

I wanted to like her...

I really rather enjoyed this book with one caveat. I really wanted to like Genevieve but, found her to be annoying and petulant. Her emotional issues aside, I simply did not find myself drawn into caring about her or her wellbeing.

fantastic story with added suprises

Not Karen's typical plot and story lines. at first I wasn't sure about it. however after a few chapters I was drawn in as I always am with her books. Well written. expect something different. hopefully there is another to follow.

The BEST book!

This is by far the best book I have read all year! It was thrilling and keeps you on edge the whole way through the plot! Such a heartfelt book. The way the author wrote this is truly incredible. It was creative and the words spoke to you. You can visualize the whole story to the point you feel like you are there. The ending was perfect! This is a must read! I am definitely going to read more books from this astounding author.

Brutal honesty about a horrible period of time

The description of suffering was so on point. The story was good and the characters well developed.
That generations suffering was captured well in this book.

The Black Swan of Paris

It is 1944 Paris. The Black Swan is a hugely popular singer - and is an unknowing member of the French Resistance - a British officer is posing as her manager, using her to mingle with the elite of the Nazi regime. Estranged from her family, she learns that her parents and sister are also resisters. Her father has been killed, and her mother captured. Her mother is aware of the coming Allied invasion, and the resistance must either rescue her or kill her before fatal Nazi torture. The Black Swan is a Harlequin release; ergo, there is romance.

It's always a pleasure to read historical novels - history intermingled with fictional characters and how events influence lives. Although a romance, there is no explicit sex, limited objectionable language that is character-driven, nothing gratuitous.

The Black Swan of Paris is written by Karen Robards, narrated by Nancy Peterson, seventeen hours of listening in unabridged audiobook format and released in June 2020 by Harlequin Audio.

Recommended.

Powerful !!! Riveting!!! Unforgettable!!!

The story and the narrator make this a book which is destined to be #1 . Such amazing performance sets the heart beating in the book that I walked around Hobby Lobby three hours and would not stop my Bluetooth! Sensually .... it has s a masterpiece. Sights, sounds, fragrances, colors, and the images of horrid torture by Nazi leaders, will stir the senses. It is intense with love and hate. Terror and peace. Joy and tears. Fear and trust. A mother’s protection and evil of Naziism personified.

It is a great book.

A woman's perspective on surviving Nazism

The Holocaust is becoming a part of history that is forgotten. It isn't skipped over in school, so books like this bring it back to life.

In this story, a woman, a sought-after headline performer, is granted curfew and travel freedoms by the Nazis. At first, she doesn't realize that she is major part of the revolution. That all changes, and things get twisty-turny, harrowing and revealing all at the same time.

The reason for four stars on performance is because the voices got confusing. Ms. Peterson does an amazing job, but I can see where having a male do the male voices would have been easier to follow. She nails the accents, but with so many transitions in a conversation, it gets a bit hard to follow. HOWEVER, her voicing for a child make you want to hug a toddler.
