Publisher's summary

For fans of The Nightingale and All the Light We Cannot See, a spellbinding story of impossible love set against the backdrop of the Nazi regime.

She must choose between loyalty to her country or a love that could be her destruction....

As the dutiful daughter of a high-ranking Nazi officer, Hetty Heinrich is keen to play her part in the glorious new Thousand Year Reich. But she never imagines that all she believes and knows about her world will come into stark conflict when she encounters Walter, a Jewish friend from the past, who stirs dangerous feelings in her. Confused and conflicted, Hetty doesn’t know whom she can trust and where she can turn to, especially when she discovers that someone has been watching her.

Realizing she is taking a huge risk - but unable to resist the intense attraction she has for Walter - she embarks on a secret love affair with him. Together, they dream about when the war will be over and plan for their future. But as the rising tide of anti-Semitism threatens to engulf them, Hetty and Walter will be forced to take extreme measures.

Will the steady march of dark forces destroy Hetty’s universe - or can love ultimately triumph? Propulsive, deeply affecting, and inspired by the author’s family history, Daughter of the Reich is a mesmerizing pause-resister filled with vivid characters and a meticulously researched portrait of Nazi Germany. In this riveting story of passion, courage, and morality, Louise Fein introduces a bold young woman determined to tread the treacherous path of survival and freedom, showing listeners the strength in the power of love and reminding us that the past must never be forgotten.

Wonderful!!

I do not normally write reviews but given this is Louise Fein’s first book and I would love to read more books written by her, I thought I would. This was an amazing novel that kept me turning the pages anxious to find out what would happen next. In the end it brought me to tears which is no easy task! Fabulous novel, I’m an instant fan! Such a touching story

I can’t stop thinking about how this book made me feel when it was finished. I couldn’t stop the tears. The author has such a way of describing the emotions of everything the characters went through. I felt like I could feel their pain. The narrator did a great job using the emotion to capture every moment. I was very touched by this book. One I will be thinking of for a long time.

Nice story

Did not care for the end. Left me with too many questions about different characters, but it was entertaining.

Story of once believer's recognition of Nazi evil

Fascinating and believable account of how young woman who was bombarded with Nazi propaganda of Jews as subhuman came to realize pure evil of Hitler & his Nazi followers, and her utter disbelief that others did not come to this same realization. Storyline and narration are so good that you feel as though you are actually there.

Good but long

Good read but way too long. The ending was bitter sweet, not cliché and felt more like a real life ending.

This book is A MUST!

This is one of the best books I’ve read/listened to in a very long time. It describes reality in Germany right before WWII from a different perspective than what I am used to (as a Jew). Louise Fein wrote this fascinating story in the most captive and touching manner I could ever imagine.
I am not a native English speaker, and so writing book reviews in English doesn’t come easy to me, but I absolutely had to write this because the book was just THAT GOOD (and probably even more).

Very sad story

The love between Walter and Hertie was well portrayed. The story was a little too long but I enjoyed listening to it.
