About this listen

A New York Times bestseller

A WASHINGTON POST “FEEL-GOOD BOOK guaranteed to lift your spirits”

“A warm, charming tale about the rewards of revealing oneself, warts and all.”—People

The story of a solitary green notebook that brings together six strangers and leads to unexpected friendship, and even love

Clare Pooley's next book, Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting, is forthcoming

Julian Jessop, an eccentric, lonely artist and septuagenarian believes that most people aren't really honest with each other. But what if they were? And so he writes—in a plain, green journal—the truth about his own life and leaves it in his local café. It's run by the incredibly tidy and efficient Monica, who furtively adds her own entry and leaves the book in the wine bar across the street. Before long, the others who find the green notebook add the truths about their own deepest selves—and soon find each other In Real Life at Monica's Café.

The Authenticity Project's cast of characters—including Hazard, the charming addict who makes a vow to get sober; Alice, the fabulous mommy Instagrammer whose real life is a lot less perfect than it looks online; and their other new friends—is by turns quirky and funny, heartbreakingly sad and painfully true-to-life. It's a story about being brave and putting your real self forward—and finding out that it's not as scary as it seems. In fact, it looks a lot like happiness.

The Authenticity Project is just the tonic for our times that listeners are clamoring for—and one they will take to their hearts and listen to with unabashed pleasure.

Slow start but stick with it

I was impatient with this novel in the beginning. The set up was quite complicated and not that compelling. I managed to keep listening and was rewarded with a deeply moving story. Sometimes insights were so targeted, I gasped. I believe I forgave my self for feeling some of the feelings expressed. Well done, Clare Pooley!

Anna Cordell added much to the reading of this tale. Her emphases made moments even more poignant.

Great for perspective and remembering what’s important

I think it’s a well written book and very well performed and reminded me that it’s human connection that makes life worth living

Stick with it

A very satisfying read. I didn’t like it at first — the plot felt contrived and manipulative — but after about 2-3 hours it got better, and I really enjoyed it from then on out. Interesting characters, good pacing, real sense of place. Recommended.

Very Good Story

The Authenticity Project was a unique way to tell a story. Each person wrote their truth, or a version of it, in a notebook and then left the notebook for another person to find. The effect it had on the reader, as well as the writer, was unexpected and very interesting. It is a tale about lives, our expectations and how we can impact our own lives and others as well. I was entertained from beginning to the end.

Doesn’t take long to get caught up in story

A wonderful narration where you don’t think about the voice of the narrator but you hear the voice and thoughts of each of the characters.

This story is about several people who are seeking connections and find that and more through finding a journal asking for a truth. Relationships (friendship and some romance) are made and the book takes you on an engaging journey in London, Chelsea; and the lives of those who write in the journal.

A charming & wonderful look at life. Real life

Just what I needed to raise my spirits & truly see all the beauty life has to offer us all if we are willing to look for it. A fabulous “authentic” journey.

An authentically brilliant book!!

Such a lovely story with interesting and realistic characters who are brilliantly layered and interwoven with each other. Storyline spools out and expands with gotta-keep-listening curves and character growth. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's style of multiple character point of views. And there is so much for the reader to compare and ponder on the authenticity in their own life and what we might write about ourselves in a little green book!! Narrator was excellent at handling and expressing the wide range of characters and emotions. An absolutely delightful listen - I didn't want it to end
