Critic reviews

"[F]eatures the same fun, fast-moving formula as the first book, with charming characters and exciting intrigue mixed with a handful of magic....” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This...well-constructed adventure accurately conveys the geopolitical instability of the era and is leavened with just enough magic, chaste romance and humor to appeal to middle-grade readers through teens." (Kirkus Reviews)

“Meloy boldly weaves the disparate strings of the story together in inventive - sometimes breathtaking - ways. More nuanced than the first book, this brings together a large and intriguing cast and explores their knotty relationships...the characters become more memorable as the pages fly by." (Booklist)

Buying the 3rd book next!!! :)

I liked the fact that the stories were very exciting and suspenseful at times and that they were adventurous and mysterious. They were also very sweet and sad. Overall I really liked the books and highly recommend them to other kids ages 8 and up.

Good Adventure Story

What does Cristin Milioti bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I honestly only downloaded the first book because she was the narrator. I had just finished the Kathy Reichs YA series she narrated and she has become one of my favs. This book is as good as the first, if not better. Decent story. Great narrator!

Amazing Book!

I am not much of a bookworm but when I get into books I just cannot stop reading. This book was one of them, I started with, "The Apothecary" and saw that it had a sequel to it, "The Apprentices", so I got the book and read it. About half way through I started listening to it on Audible, and the narrating was fantastic, it also contributed to creation of imagery in your head. I did not really know what to expect in this book except Benjamin finding a way to get to Janie. It was so much more filled with adventures and details then I expected. (SPOILER) Last but not least, the most memorable part was when Benjamin saw through Janie's eyes when Raffaello was kissing her. I felt kind of felt bad for Benjamin, but it was so cute at the end where Janie held Benjamin's hand during the play. This book was one of my favorite and I strongly recommend it!

Great performance but only a good story.

I really enjoyed the performance of the storyI really enjoyed the performance of the story. However the story itself was just good, not great. There is too much teen drama near the beginning for me.
