It contains three chapters which show how interest in the turtle/tortoise changed in Renaissance art and during the European Cultural Expansion of the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries, moving from abstract concepts of sluggishness and modesty towards decorative and representational forms where symbolic significance was dependent on context. The real turtle came to the fore as curiosity cabinets led to zoological research, pirates and colonists discovered turtle-meat and tortoiseshell, sea-turtles and giant tortoises fed whalers and prospectors, before the turtle-soup craze led to mock-turtle, and tortoiseshell to gelatin.
