It starts with a general preface to the whole work succeeded by an introductory chapter of Natural History giving a survey of species from fossil remains to the present-day. The chronological sequence begins with a chapter on Prehistory, Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, and is followed by two chapters on Ancient Greece and Rome. The turtle/tortoise, when associated with the Egyptian god Seth, was representative of the powers of darkness, but with the Akkadian deities Ea and Ishtar was of life, as it was with the Greek deities Aphrodite, Hermes and Apollo.
