Story
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Story
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Story
Medical-school-dropout police detective Richelle Dadd is...well, dead. But that won't stop her from trying to hold on to her house in a divorce battle with a bitter husband. Or keep her from digging into her own murder, to discover who put the bullet into her heart. Or from coming to terms with her Gypsy heritage. And it certainly won't stand in the way of finding out the reason she's been reanimated as a zombie assassin, no longer in control of her life.

A curmudgeon. A loner. That's how people describe Garrison Gage, and that's when they're being charitable. After his wife's brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the crippled private investigator retreats 3,000 miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife's death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach....

If you've never read a Repairman Jack novel, this is the place to begin. It's 1990. A twenty-one-year-old named Jack has dropped out of college, leaving his old life behind to build a new one in New York City. Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. And to do so, he'll have to take jobs of a less than legal nature.

Story
Alan Gregory is a clinical psychologist with a thriving practice in Boulder, Colorado. His life begins to unravel when one of his female patients is found in an apparent suicide and the local paper begins printing accusations from an unnamed source of sexual impropriety between the woman and Dr. Gregory. He launches a psychological and personal quest for the truth that rapidly intensifies when more of his patients die untimely deaths, and Gregory suspects not only that the deaths are related but that another one of his patients may be somehow involved. Lacking facts but roused by suspicion and troubled by seemingly random acts of terror around him, Gregory starts to fear for the safety of the people he loves. The question of the inviolability of confidential disclosures made to Gregory by his patients - privileged information - becomes crucial as the psychologist pursues an unsettling romance with Lauren Crowder, a lovely deputy district attorney investigating one of the deaths. Bound to silence, Gregory follows the psychological tracks of someone he fears may be a cunning and disturbed killer, while turning to his enigmatic but supportive partner, Diane Estevez, for counsel, and to his tart-tongued female urologist neighbor for support. The sinister, surprising drama unfolds against Boulder's Rocky Mountain backdrop, in the arresting natural beauty of Aspen, and in the midst of a baroque Halloween costume party in downtown Boulder. Finally, in a lonely mountain lodge enshrouded in menace, the story comes to its breathtaking climax.

Narrator brings this story to life!
What made the experience of listening to Swings and Roundabouts the most enjoyable?
The narrator did an absolutely outstanding job! The story was okay, but Al did such an excellent job that he took this book from good to great!
Have you listened to any of A.T. Al Benelli’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first book I listened to Al narrate. He did such an excellent job I'll be on the look out for his next work.

Like a Humphrey Bogart "short"...
Would you consider the audio edition of Swings and Roundabouts to be better than the print version?
Yes... but then again I prefer audiobooks that are "performed" well, as this one was. I look for books that are read like a "play" or movie where characters are given distinct voices and personalities. I can set the scenes in my mind and identify individuals more easily. I'm a big fan of this narrator and have listened to nearly all his books.
What other book might you compare Swings and Roundabouts to and why?
"The Old Man and the King" by Joe Corso. Different setting, but the same type of storyline... mystery, drama, murder, intrigue. Another one narrated, or should I say performed by A.T. Al Benelli.
What does A.T. Al Benelli bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
See above... It's about the performance! I'm old enough to remember the radio shows of the 50"s and 60's like Inner Sanctum and Amos & Andy. Good audiobooks take me back to those days where the action is performed and you built the stage or setting in your head. This was such a book with a good story and a performance to match.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes... And I did. I listened to it in one afternoon, poolside. Only took breaks to refresh my gin & tonic... often!
Any additional comments?
I have listened to a lot of this narrators books. I knew him when he was a stage actor doing summer stock in Pennsylvania. An impressive range of voices!
