Publisher's summary

A fraud uncovered.... A past haunting him.... He had something to prove in this gripping thriller reviewers are calling "fresh," "captivating," and "inspiring."

Sam Halloran is ambitious, a bit desperate, and running from an ugly past. He has a family to support, and everything hinges on his job as a newly minted auditor. But when he is assigned to his first public company audit, he discovers something no one else did. Fraud...massive fraud!

That's when the walls start to close in.

As Sam struggles with what to do and confronts the pain of his past, the company's smart, seductive accounting manager becomes both ally and temptation. With each piece of evidence painting a bigger target on his back, Sam wonders if she would rather help him uncover the truth or lead him straight into a deadly trap....

Suddenly, average-joe-Sam becomes modern-day David, up against an unforeseen giant that could crush him in an instant. He'll remind you a lot of Mitch McDeere in John Grisham's pioneering legal thriller, The Firm, a guy in so deep, so suddenly, he hasn't yet checked the exits. And now it's too late to run.

Will Sam expose the fraud before a powerful corporation has him erased from the ledger?

Read more about this novel and author Tom Golden:

One of the great satisfactions of this book comes from accompanying Sam on his journey from troubled young man to potential victim to...well, anyone's guess. And Golden, a real-life forensic accounting investigator, doesn't disappoint. The first in a new series, Sunday Night Fears is as much psychological thriller as suspense thriller that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats as they root for Sam's success, then his safety, and when it comes right down to it, his soul. Because this audit has the potential to change him forever - in good, bad, or even fatal ways.

Fans of John Grisham, John Ellsworth, Scott Pratt, Sheldon Siegel, Stephen Fry, and financial fraud movies like The Big Short and Ben Affleck's The Accountant will have a fine time shivering at Sam's struggles and cheering him on. But they won't expect the ending. Even after the shocking denouement, Golden has another card up his sleeve, guaranteed to stun even the most sophisticated.

Tom Golden is retired from leading one of the largest forensic accounting investigation practices in the US. He has a national reputation in financial crime investigation and is a frequent presenter to the Fortune 500 and many organizations including the FBI and IRS. He is a CPA and certified fraud examiner (CFE). He was the financial fraud expert appearing in the 2017 film documentary All the Queen's Horses, detailing the largest municipal fraud in American history. Prior to turning his attention to the literary world, he was the lead author of the award-winning Wiley book A Guide to Forensic Accounting Investigation, now in its second edition. He continues to write novels and speak about his high-profile financial crime investigations.

Outstanding book by an outstanding author. The truth behind this author’s insights and impact is amazing.

The story is gripping and drew me in. A surprise to me was hearing through the journey of this book truths in what creates a successful forensics investigator and professional services leader in a major firm. I got so much more than my already high expectations for the book. I leave this story hungry for the author’s next books. Awesome!

Interesting,out of my normal genre

I listen to mysteries all the time but have never had a “ numbers guy” at the center of the story. Enough characters, good plot, dialog was good and had an element of surprise at the end. Really enjoyed this new series and look forward to Sams next audit, wonder where he will take us next.

Decisions

Sam ambitious, an accountant, has a chance to advance with a good company, which his wife is also supportive. Decision was not easy, when he uncovers fraud with a big client’s account, to remain quiet, or tell. The auditors want to keep quiet, what about the company. The life he and his family have known is now with fear, murder and suspense. Given ARC audio of which added to this story for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

Enjoyable and gripping forensic accounting thriller

I enjoyed Tom Golden's first novel immensely. There are millions of police procedural and legal thrillers out there, but very seldom books about forensic accountants. I particularly liked reading the specific forensic accounting and auditing methods used, which made it seem more realistic. If you're just looking for a mystery but are not into procedures, then skip this book. But if you're like me and relish the details, you won't be disappointed. Can't wait for the next installment!

Suspenseful thriller!!

Golden creates a tense and sensitive story of his alter ego Sam Holleran. The character development is excellent. You really care what might happen. Don’t let the accounting background fool you, the story really is challenging. A great book!

This book needed a good editor with a red pencil!

As an accountant married to a former Big 8 IT auditor, I was excited when I purchased the book because 1) it was about Forensic Accounting and 2) because it was the first book of a new series. It did not take long to be disappointed! The forensic accounting which I would have found exciting was maybe 1/10th of the story if that the rest was whining. I will not be purchasing the second in his series.

AAARGH! Terrible book.

Trust me, this is a waste of time. Oh the premise of a new field, forensic accounting, getting our mystery story attention was enticing. In fact it was the reason I bought this thing. But after hours of the whining Job-like (That's JOB as in the biblical character) lead character's sheep-like behavior and Sisyphus stones that Tom Golden made him carry over hills that had nothing to do with a mystery story... Well I just stopped listening - hours into this mess. Perhaps a crime may occur if Golden's given enough time to reveal it. Perhaps the forensic accountant may bring new tools to crime fighting that will reveal that crime and crush its bad-folk. Dunno, and will never know. Wish I could rewind this book along with the hours I wasted waiting for the story to start. Never again will I buy a Golden book. AAARGH!
