About this listen

Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day.

It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica.

But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history.

Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Sensing the McGregors and townspeople are keeping terrible secrets, Isla plans to discover the truth.

But the closer Isla comes to uncovering answers, the more the danger mounts. And with a dense cover of snow now blanketing the town, all chance of escape might already be gone.

Wow!

Honestly I'd give this story 7 or 8 stars out of 5. From beginning to end, my jaw kept dropping. I thought I knew who dunnit, but I was wrong.

Narrator made this story work

Man after reading the reviews I thought this was going to be epic. I am not going to ruin it for anyone but the ending is ridiculous. I think this one was written for maybe more female readers cause I can't see how you could forget the stuff she has forgotten throughout this story it just doesn't make sense to me.

Chapter 14

What the h*ll happened at chapter 14? Characters enter the story that either have been forgotten or just now bringing up - now gradually but all at once in full force as though it’s the most natural transition. Aubrey, Peyton, Simon, Bridgette, Dermott (they’ve convinced Isla to go drinking & she doesn’t know them…who the h*ll are they? They’re drunk & she’s stuck without a ride back home. Then there’s crazy & creepy Troy who supposedly knows Isla but she has no recollection of him & he’s extremely bitter. I’m having too hard a time sliding these people, who fell from the sky, into the story. No character development…just jumped right in as though they’re developed characters listeners/readers are already familiar with. I either go back & listen from the beginning & hope they were mentioned or move on…..🙄

Slow start but enjoyable and lots of twists

The first few chapters couldn’t keep my attention, but eventually it picked up and there were several twists that kept it interesting (but some towards the end require suspension of disbelief). All in all it was plenty entertaining.

Plot twist

I am super good at plot twist guessing, it's a horrible habit of mine. I guess the end and then I'm mad when I am right. I was shocked when I was wrong.

Great story and amazing narration!

This book is a great story that will keep you on your toes and make you not want to stop listening until the very end. And the narration is amazing. At one point I had to go back and look at the details to find out if there were several voices doing the narration or if it was just one. The narrator goes back-and-forth seamlessly between Australian accent and Scottish accent and into various voices and giving the background noise as if you were truly there. I highly recommend this book, especially when you can get it free on audible if you’re a member.
