About this listen
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Accidental Billionaires and Bringing Down the House - the sources for the films The Social Network and 21 - comes the larger-than-life true tale of a group of American college buddies who brilliantly built a billion-dollar online poker colossus based out of the hedonistic paradise of Costa Rica.
One problem: the U.S. Department of Justice was gunning for them....
Based on extensive insider interviews and participation, acclaimed author Ben Mezrich's Straight Flush tells the captivating rags-to-riches tale of a group of University of Montana frat brothers who turned a weekly poker game in the basement of a local dive bar into AbsolutePoker.com, one of the largest online companies in the world, on par with some of the behemoths of the Internet. At its height, Absolute Poker was an online empire earning more than a million dollars a day, following savvy business strategy and even better luck. Its founders set up their operations in the exotic jungle paradise of Costa Rica, embracing an outrageous lifestyle of girls, parties, and money.
Meanwhile, the gray area of U.S. and international law in which the company operated was becoming a lot more risky, and soon the U.S. Department of Justice had placed a bull's-eye on Absolute Poker. Should they fold - or double down and ride their hot hand? Straight Flush is an exclusive, never-before-seen look behind the headlines of one of the wildest business stories of the past decade.

Story
In the midst of the Go-Go '90s, the culture of greed infused the MIT campus. A small blackjack club sprang up, dedicated to counting cards and beating the house at major casinos around the country. The Club grew slowly at first, but by the late 1990s, the right people had come up with the right system to take some of the world's most sophisticated casinos for all they were worth.

Semyon Dukach was known as the Darling of Las Vegas. A legend at age 21, this cocky hotshot was the biggest high roller to appear in Sin City in decades, a mathematical genius with a system the casinos had never seen before and couldn't stop, a system that has never been revealed until now; that has nothing to do with card counting, wasn't illegal, and was more powerful than anything that had been tried before.

Story
The high-energy tale of how two socially awkward Ivy Leaguers, trying to increase their chances with the opposite sex, ended up creating Facebook. Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg were Harvard undergraduates and best friends - outsiders at a school filled with polished prep-school grads and long-time legacies. They shared both academic brilliance in math and a geeky awkwardness with women. The Accidental Billionaires is a compulsively listenable story of innocence lost - and of the unusual creation of a company that has revolutionized the way people relate to one another.

Widely regarded as “the Michael Jordan of sports betting,” Walters is a living legend in Las Vegas and among sports bettors worldwide. With an unmatched winning streak of thirty-six consecutive years, Walters has become fabulously wealthy by placing hundreds of millions of dollars a year in gross wagers, including one Super Bowl bet of $3.5 million alone. Competitors desperate to crack his betting techniques have tried hacking his phones, cloning his beepers, rifling through his trash, and bribing his employees.

It’s a story of guts and glory, of good luck and bad, of triumph and unspeakable tragedy, of courage and grace. In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. As the wild-eyed, swastika-tattooed, nightmarishly charismatic leader of the Manson Family, he was convicted of the brutal killings of nine people in 1971, including the Tate-LaBianca murders of seven in Los Angeles over two hot August nights in 1969.

If you've never read a Repairman Jack novel, this is the place to begin. It's 1990. A twenty-one-year-old named Jack has dropped out of college, leaving his old life behind to build a new one in New York City. Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. And to do so, he'll have to take jobs of a less than legal nature.

Story
A murderer is on the loose on the streets of New York City: nicknamed the Doomsday Killer, he's claimed six victims in just two weeks, and the city is terrified. Even worse, the police are mystified: the victims have nothing in common, defying all profiling, and all that connects them is that each received a sick postcard in the mail before they died - a postcard that announced their date of death. In desperation, the FBI assigns the case to maverick agent Will Piper, once the most accomplished serial-killing expert in the bureau's history, now on a dissolute spiral to retirement.

Shatner?
What didn’t you like about Sean Pratt’s performance?
There were moments where he seemed to be channeling William Shatner.
Any additional comments?
If you liked the movie "Runner Runner" one of the storylines woven into it was the Absolute Poker story that is told in more detail (and with less dramatic license) in Straight Flush.

Interesting Topic, overly simplistic writing
It started out as an interesting story, but halfway through the book it seemed more like the writer took a news story and applied stereotypes to the people involved in absolute poker and wrote a novel. I don’t care about the chicks he spent time to detail every over page, I had hoped this would have been a more detailed account of the business and the inner workings that made it possible to build. Should have been much better.

Great story and a fun listen!
What did you love best about Straight Flush?
I loved the feeling I got listening to the story and trying to capture how the characters felt in different situations.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
The story from rags to riches to rags...all though not exactly. But I liked how the story evolved and it was fun to hear about how a few guys with an idea made a profitable business.
Have you listened to any of Sean Pratt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
High stakes, high flying, pure enjoyment!

Who knew??
What an interesting behind-the-scenes peek into the Online Poker world! I had no idea what was, or is, really going on!
This is my third book by this author, and I have enjoyed all three. They are well researched, extremely well written, and this one is also narrated very well. I feel like I still have an unanswered question after finishing, but it is only a minor detraction from an otherwise very good story.
I do recommend this audiobook--I felt it was definitely worth the time and credit spent!!

Makes you rethink your contempt for the Absolute Poker guys. I'm sure this is heavily biased towards the story they want told, but it makes you at least consider that they weren't all bad.

The Downfall of Absolute Poker
Interesting story of how the US government temporarily put a dent in online Poker by focusing on crushing Absolute Poker. The frat kids were scapegoats for the US's attempt to stop online gaming. To me, it was heartbreaking to learn they were within 1 week of being billionaires, only to have the rug swept from under them.
The narration is excellent.
