About this listen

From the best-selling author of CyberStorm comes a wild ride through the Wall Street underworld.

One minute Jake O'Connell is on top of the world, with a beautiful family and bright future as a stock broker in New York; the next it's all ripped away when he's embroiled in a fraud investigation, his childhood friend is murdered, and he finds himself on the run. Dodging the FBI and targeted by the Mob, Jake is thrown into a Wall Street underworld of crypto currencies and autonomous corporations, where he discovers a dark secret setting the world on a path to destruction. He must evade the shadowy forces hunting him and find a way to redemption - but the faster he runs, the deeper he becomes entangled. In the end his only path forward is to return to the ghosts of his past.

Darknet is a journey into the back alleys of global finance and cyber espionage, the story of one man's quest to redeem himself and save his family.

poor editing

irritating things like...
Schenectady is not "a little more than 2 hrs to Montreal". it is 3-1/2 hrs minimum. it really bugs me when writers get all specific about some person or place, then not do the research that makes the story plausible. really brings a good story down.

Too easy of a cleanup

Good read all the way through until the final chapters; the finality was too simple, contrived, and not remotely likely.

Mix of psychological & action thriller

This had a lot of the elements I loved from the movie Enemy of the State. I enjoyed the mix of psychological & action thriller elements. What’s creepier than knowing your personal information is available to anyone with skills and a computer? How about that info being used to predict your every move, frame you for horrible crimes, or hunt you to your death?

The beginning was a little slow due to the number of main characters and foundational info, but once it got going I really enjoyed it. There were twists and turns as each side tried to predict and thwart the other. I liked that the main characters were every day people who worked together to solve the mysteries and keep each other alive.

The ending was solid and I liked the epilogue-ish chapter. I’ll definitely be checking out more from Mather.

Narration:
I specifically chose this because Tom Taylorson narrates. As always, he does a good job giving all the characters unique voices & accents consistent with the writing. Delivery was seamless. Gripping listen.

A decent technical thriller

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this book to both technical and non-technical readers. The author does a good job of describing technical concepts without going too deep or long. Overall the story was well done and had nice flow.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Although I enjoyed the ending, compared to other technical thrillers, I thought it was a bit flat. This is also the case compared to other materials by the same author. Not a bad ending, but not a show-stopper either.

What about Tom Taylorson’s performance did you like?

I enjoyed the narration of the book, and reader did a good job of using inflection and different voices for the characters.

Could you see Darknet being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I would think a movie rather than TV series. I would think a better option from this author would be "Cyber Storm" for becoming a movie to TV series.
