About this listen

A tarnished legacy. A dangerous mission. The beginning of an epic destiny....

Nobleman and born soldier Ben Stiger never backs down from a fight. Even as the son of an infamous imperial general, an outcast from society, he refuses to crumble under the unforgiving shadow of his once-powerful family’s disgrace. When he’s reassigned from his crack company to the struggling southern army, he’s eager to help turn the tide against a growing deadly rebellion.

Supported by his faithful lieutenant, Eli, one of the last remaining elven rangers, and a holy Paladin on a quest for the High Father, Stiger fights to gain control of his new company, resentful and mediocre soldiers, who he must train and then lead on a desperate mission to reach an outpost cut off by the enemy. But as he force-marches his men through hostile territory, the veteran commander faces more than he ever expected: rebels, bandits, a magic relic from an age long gone, and an ancient evil freshly risen that has to potential to destroy the empire he loves and serves.

Can one outcast hero make a difference and save his empire from annihilation?

Stiger’s Tigers is the engrossing first book in the Chronicles of an Imperial Officer epic fantasy series. If you like brave champions, sword and sorcery, breathtaking twists and turns, and authentic battle scenes, then you’ll love Marc Alan Edelheit’s Roman-inspired adventure series.

Wasn't sure what to expect. Ended up loving it!

Would you listen to Stiger's Tigers again? Why?

Yes! The narrator, Steven Brand, was perfect. He didn't do stupid accents or try to make each character sound vastly different so you could tell who was speaking. Steven would put the slightest possible change in inflection, pitch, speed of his voice, etc to distinguish which character was speaking.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was pretty typical of a military/fantasy novel but there were some really good twists that gave me goosebumps.

Which character – as performed by Steven Brand – was your favorite?

Stiger by far.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions, but definitely caught by surprise at several points in the novel.

Great book!

Short by my usual standards, but still a solid effort. It took me a bit to warm up to the narrator, but I came around in the end. I fear I'll have to buy all 4 books now :).

Favorite Narrator

Would you listen to Stiger's Tigers again? Why?

If I had the time to listen to books twice I would say Yes.

Have you listened to any of Steven Brand’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Blood Song, this was spot on. I loved Blood Song as my favorite series and this book was very comparable. I intend to finish this series and listen to other books he reads. I can't figure out if it is the book or the narrator that makes Blood Song or Stiger's Tigers.

Great writing

The book is interesting anthem set you up for the next one. It makes me wonder what is beyond Castle Rell and what the sword’s power really is. I want to start reading the next book immediately. I don’t even want to wait until the 27th which is when I will get my next book.

Worthy tale

Stiger’s Tiger’s moves at a steady pace never giving you a chance to get distracted from the tale and the action. If you are traveling, or need something to listen to while doing housework, cooking, yard work or wood working, this story will keep your mind occupied and is worth the credit. I enjoyed finding the Roman Legions in a new world as refreshing, but I found the world building to be a little lacking. The characters needed a bit more flesh to them. I have read some reviews invoking the spirit of Bernard Cornwell’s Utred and Sharpe’s series. Yet, you don’t come away from this knowing Stiger or his elf companion as you do with Sharpe and Harper or Utred and Finnegan. Some of the hanging details that keep this story from excelling are simple things, such as, Stiger’s company name themselves Stiger’s Tigers at the end of the book. Yet since this is a new world where did the Tiger pelt come from. While this book is not one that you will wish to replay to absorb the details, the story is good, the narrator is absolutely excellent and the book is worth the listen.
