Publisher's summary

As lead investigator of the Indiana State Police Major Crimes Unit, Detective Virgil Jones tackles only the toughest cases in the state, and the one he faces this time has the city of Indianapolis on edge, near the brink of panic. A team of serial snipers are on the loose. Their killing ground is the city. Their victims are chosen at random. Or are they? With no witnesses and very little evidence, it's up to Virgil Jones and his team to find out who is behind the on-going massacre and stop them once and for all...if they can. But Virgil has his own problems, both personal and professional. Among them, a backlog of cases that require his attention, the sudden reappearance of his long lost friend who is a convicted felon, a downtown bar he co-owns with his father, and he is in love with Sandy Small, one of the investigators in his unit.

With the entire population of the city of Indianapolis at risk, it's up to Virgil and Sandy to explore the dark places of a past where nothing is quite as it seems. As the clues begin to fall in place they paint a portrait of betrayal, deceit, blood-lust, and greed, and in the midst of it all, Virgil and Sandy make a personal discovery so profound it will change their lives forever. Voodoo Daddy is a story of life, love, murder and mystery; one that examines the depths of human emotions and the dark places they often lead us all.

Good story but a very poor narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I couldn't finish it. The narrator is just too hard to listen to, even though I did like the story and I liked the main character, for the most part. Listen to this and then listen to say, a John Sandford novel. for comparison. This series has promise, has a long way to go to 'good'

What other book might you compare State of Anger: A Virgil Jones Mystery to and why?

I just compared it, in a very broad way, to John Sandford's Lucas Davenport series. It's nowhere near as well done, but there are some similarities. .

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narrators can also make such a huge difference in the presentation of a book. No one as supposedly young as Virgil Jones should sound like an 80 year old who smokes too much. and ewwww...the sex part....

Did State of Anger: A Virgil Jones Mystery inspire you to do anything?

Find a better series to read?? Avoid this narrator....

Any additional comments?

Find a different narrator, please, please. I'd give it another try with a different voice

So great to find a new series!

This is right there with Sandford, Connelly and Parker. I found this through Book Series in Order. Com. Great stuff.

Excellent!

i have heard of this author but I had neither read nor listened to any of his books. I am so glad that I happened to get a code from Audiobooks Unleashed to listen to this book on Audible. The intense suspense keeps you listening to try and pull all the clues together and figure out not only who is guilty but why everything is happening the way it is. When everything gets wrapped up you can see the puzzle that emerges with all the pieces in place. This book has taken a lot of plotting to be able to give it to us in a way that we just have to keep going. I absolutely loved it and know that I will be looking for more books by this author. When I first started listening I thought there is no way I can listen to this voice for a whole book. Low and behold the author knew what he was doing when he chose Daniel Dorse , you will understand what I mean when you listen yourself. This review is my own honest opinion.

State of anger

This is my first time reading/listening
this author. I very much enjoyed this book and will try the next one in this series. Great plot. As far as Daniel Dorsey, for me there are some things that were great and other things not so much. Virgil is supposed to be middle aged but the voice used hit me as a sixty something that has smoked 2 packs a day. Having said that I loved his southern accents. I am from the south and sometimes it can sound so fake but he sounds really good, made me wonder if he is from the south - that good.

couldn't listen to this. The narrator's gruff, whispery voice was incompatible with my hearing.

could not listen because the narrator's voice was too gravelly, too low, and too whispery.

Didnt like it. Unusual for me as I am avid reader.

Would you try another book from Thomas L. Scott and/or Daniel Dorse?

No. Waste of my time.

What could Thomas L. Scott have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Just dont enjoy vulgarity and the narrator was boring.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Daniel Dorse?

?? There have only been a couple of instances when I didnt care for narration and deleted book and this was one

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

Any additional comments?

Was going to purchase whole series but glad I didn t. Just personal taste.
