About this listen

In Spymaster's Prism, the legendary former spymaster Jack Devine details the unending struggle with Russia and its intelligence agencies as it works against our national security. Devine tells this story through the unique perspective of a seasoned CIA professional who served more than three decades, some at the highest levels of the agency. He uses his gimlet-eyed view to walk us through the fascinating spy cases and covert action activities of Russia, not only through the Cold War past, but up to and including its interference in the Trump era. Devine also looks over the horizon to see what lies ahead in this struggle and provides prescriptions for the future.

Based on personal experience and exhaustive research, Devine builds a vivid and complex mosaic that illustrates how Russia's intelligence activities have continued uninterrupted throughout modern history, using fundamentally identical policies and techniques to undermine our democracy. He shows in stark terms how intelligence has been modernized and weaponized through the power of the cyber world.

A brilliant historical review and call to action

I have read so much about the Cold War, the early days of the CIA, and Putin's Russia that the historical component of this book for me, it served to further corroborate my level of knowledge on all 3 topics, which I still found invaluable and fascinating. 😊. As for the call to action in terms of present day threats coming from the Kremlin, I agree with everything DeVine says and in fact, I have to say it's a shame that the author has retired from the IC. I think he has brilliant ideas and I hope his recommendations are being incorporated. I think the US and the West as a whole must reinvigorate its offensive and defensive policy against Putin and the silovki. The Cold War was just ending when I was born, but the New One has in the past 6 years is obviously the top foreign policy priority of the KGB officer in chief in the Kremlin and as an American who loves democracy, I believe a new generation in the West must come together to meet this threat and defeat it.

Regurgitated stories of the past

If you are looking to be swayed and Or impressed by the content of espionage. Then I highly suggest you look elsewhere. This book brings nothing New to what is happening around the world even from the author‘s point of view. His prism is outdated since 1999. Look elsewhere for a more relevant and new approach on how to run clandestine operations. I would suggest “the spy master of Baghdad” by Margaret Coker.
