About this listen

What does it mean to say “I love you” in the digital age? Fresh off the Boat author and host of Viceland’s Huang’s World Eddie Huang swipes right and meets his perfect match in this short tale of “shooting your shot.”

Julie, 28, Chicago. All Eddie had were her photos - her green eyes and her wayward posture. Who made the first move doesn’t matter...or does it? Off jump, he could tell she was bad news and a great catch. But how to bring it to the real world? That’s what a whirlwind vacation in St. Barth’s is for. Follow along as one man tries to turn his supreme confidence and complete vulnerability into three little words.

Single Asiatic Male Seeks Ride or Die Chick is part of The Real Thing, a collection of moving, hilarious, and big-hearted essays on the modern realities of friendship, romance, commitment, and love. Each story can be listened to in a single sitting.

Cute and quick

Huang has good flair and penned an enjoyably quick listen, that hits enough thoughtful notes to make it memorable.

Unique, Engaging, and Insightful

Listened to it back to back on my drive back from Los Angeles as the school year ended. Read it again couple days later. Eddie has a unique voice and perspective yet speaks on the emotions and vulnerability that we all feel one way or another. A great addition to his previous longer works.

Well, it wasn’t what I expected

For some reason, I was thinking this was going to be less slang-ridden. I mean, he has a similar style in prose to some famous US writers, but the story was a bit too dependent on texting technology to be easily comprehended via Audible. I think I’d enjoy this better as a document.

The author’s performance did not help that sense. Unfortunately, Huang’s reading was too fast to appreciate the nuances. I thought about slowing it down from 1x to .75x just to see if it helped me enjoy it? Either way, I wish he had slowed down and given more significant pauses so the continuation didn’t just jam into each other but gave enough room to really audibly hear he had moved to the next section.

The story was okay. I appreciated his apprehension regarding love and—oddly—the bit about performance anxiety when it really mattered was reasonable. But—again—it was rather entrenched in pop-vernacular and I wasn’t into it. I probably just need to re-read this on paper to better enjoy it.

5 stars from a thai restaurant

Written and read by the legendary based fob himself. A perfect listen while sipping saki on the suzukis.

I love how it’s told in the characters language. I love this love story. I love how realistic it is. I love the performance and the message within the story. I am my favorite part was the vulnerability of the main character. Love love, Tiffany Joy Bankhead

the annoying colloquial slang and hip-hop speech

if this is a true story of how he met his love, then it's cute. the slang and hip-hop speech was annoying. I guess there is audience for that, I'm just not it.

goog grasp of millennial life, and angst

todays colloqial keroac of slanguage and earnestness that some how draws the beart of the reader in. many books of this era are repellant because of ungrateful and shallow pride yet this one touches with authenticity
