About this listen

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson

Victorian England - a time of historic significance, as the world was poised expectantly for the coming wonders and terrors of the new century. Amid this atmosphere of anticipation and intrigue, one man emerged as a beacon of logic and cold, calculating reason in an unsettling time: R. Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective, and his trusted friend and chronicler, Dr. John H. Watson.

A famous soccer player is found dead in the clubhouse. An unidentified stowaway is murdered aboard a US Navy warship while another man is found asphyxiated in an empty, locked room. These are several of the twisted puzzles challenging the Baker Street sleuth as he once again takes up the hunt on the fog-ridden streets of London, accompanied by his faithful ally, Dr. Watson.

Writers Aaron Smith, Andrew Salmon, Van Allen Plexico, and Ian Watson have set forth exciting new mysteries done in the traditional style of the original Holmes stories, as written by his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. There are no space aliens or howling werewolves here, simply good, old-fashioned whodunits. So arm yourself for danger and all manner of villainy, as once again, the game is afoot!

Well curated collection of Holmes & Watson stories

The editor of this book made some excellent choices in deciding who would contribute to this anthology. Each story is well-written in its own way. Overall, they capture the spirit of the time and the personalities of the two well-known Victorian crime-fighters. The book is not great, but it is very good.

As an audiobook narrator myself I tend to notice the readers of books perhaps a little more keenly than some. The narrator of this book, obviously not British, made the wise decision to not read with a fake accent, but to read with his own natural voice. However, his misprounciation of many common words was distracting.

Consulting Detective Book 1

Narrator voice was different but ok. I opine we needed more of a UK accent. Stories and explanations were detailed and interesting but would rather have the explanations included in the same chapters as opposed separate chapters. I guess more stories would have been more fun! Stories started a bit slow but great as we got into the book.

Narration is singularly horrible.

George Kuch may be a decent narrator but his narration of Sherlock Holmes is a crime. The pace is slow, he stumbles over words and his American accent is a kick in the groin. Really, nobody with a British accent could be signed for this series? Simply horrible.
