Publisher's summary

He's always taken risks…but this risk might be his last.

In a society that has forgotten that some of its citizens are human, Kalib Fisher is just trying to survive.

Born into the Cobalts, the lowest rung of society, he has done everything to protect those he loves, even if it meant skirting the rules. So when an opportunity presents itself to ensure the safety of his best friend, Tenly Hawkins, he must leave everything behind and follow her into the Cobalt Premier Workforce.

But instead of being happy, Tenly begrudges his choice and rejects him. Somehow she knows he doesn't deserve the placement and must have cheated to get ahead.

Nothing is as he knew it in a new Scarlet household that holds dangerous secrets, and Kalib must accept a fate that could lead to his destruction.

Despite the threat, his pull to Tenly won't leave his mind, especially when he sees her drawing closer to a treacherous member of her household…and there's little he can do to protect her this time.

Shattered

We heard Tenly’s side after become a member of the Cobalt Premier Workforce in Collapsed book 1, now we hear what Kalib has gone through after going to his assignment in the Premier Workforce. His job and function to the scarlets have been very different than Tenly’s. Even through Tenly’s rejection and her implying that he cheated to get his spot, Kalib just can’t shake Tenly from him mind not to mention he promised her dad he would watch put for her.

This was a wonderful book that showed a different side of the same place and allowed the reader/listener to get the whole story before moving on. There is so much action and suspense that it will keep you up past your bedtime to find out what happens. I had the audio and took the long way to each destination so I could hear more. The narrator Darren Martens does a excellent job telling Kalib’s story that you forget that you aren’t actually listening to the character. This is a great clean series one that should not be missed.

The Things We Do For Love

This book covers the same time frame as the first book, just from Kaleb’s point of view. Unlike Tenly, Kaleb left the Tenement fully aware of the Alliance. It is fascinating to see the same series of events from a completely different perspective and mindset. Loved it! Highly recommend!

Another Dimension to the Story

Kalib’s viewpoint gave the story a whole new dimension. Not only was his perspective different, but there was so much more to learn due to his deeper involvement in the Alliance. I had to go back and reread parts of Collapsed in order to see some of the connections and I must say that I really appreciated the author’s attention to detail when it came to some of the shared scenes. The dialogue and movements were perfectly replicated.

And what could be more relevant than a story that balances the themes of social change with a deadly virus? However, I am a bit disappointed that this book didn’t satisfy my desire to learn about what is coming next in the story. Now I just have to impatiently await the release of Fractured.

Unique Second Entry

I really enjoyed this. Jenetta Penner does something a little different in her second entry in The Illusion of Truth. I received an Audio version for review and what follows is my honest review.

Born into the Cobalts, Kalib and Tenly are the lowest rungs of society. While Tenly has worked hard to join the Cobalt Premier Workforce and Kalib is recruited as a cover as part of a cobalt revolutionary group. Tenly begrudges his placement in the program believing he doesn't deserve it. Regardless, he moves forward in the underground group and all the while focusing on making sure she is safe.
The second book moves to Kalib's perspective and a new narrator. The narrator is perfect for Kalib using the proper emotions instead of just plain reading. I really liked seeing from Kalib as this sets The Illusion of Truth Apart from other YA Dystopian sagas.

point of view

so yes this series is set about 100 years before the configured series. this book is based off Kaleb’s point of view. As the first was Tenly's point of view. It is a must read series.
