About this listen
Many people suffer from a disorder called sensory processing disorder. Or they may suffer from a more specific condition called Irlen Syndrome. They suffer from it for most of their life without ever being aware that their sensitivities are due to an actual condition. There are many signs and symptoms that may go undiagnosed for decades in a sufferer. Once a diagnosis is made, the person is suddenly able to immediately improve the quality of their life.
Sensory processing disorder and Irlen Syndrome affect nearly every aspect of life. These disorders can make you feel depressed, crazy, unbalanced, or socially awkward. They can make a person feel unintelligent, unable to learn, confused, and disappointed in themselves. The symptoms can lower a person's self-confidence, self-esteem, and their sense of self-worth.
This audiobook seeks to explain what Irlen Syndrome and sensory processing disorders are. We will discuss who can diagnose these conditions, as these two disorders are often missed by a pediatrician or family physician. We will touch on the different ways that a person can learn to help reduce their own symptoms through easy things that they can do and use at work, at school, and at home. We seek to help those with the symptoms of sensory processing disorder and Irlen Syndrome.
As a mother, I have three children with sensory processing disorder and Irlen Syndrome symptoms. One child has ADHD. The second child has an inheritable autism spectrum disorder. The third child was born with cerebral palsy due to placental abruption. We work through the challenges of SPD and Irlen Syndrome each day. We are able to see firsthand how Irlen Syndrome and sensory processing disorders affect learning, behavior, and stress levels in children with both disorders.

Sydney Shaw, like every single woman in New York, has terrible luck with dating. She’s seen it all: men who lie in their dating profile, men who stick her with the dinner bill, and worst of all, men who can't shut up about their mothers. But finally, she hits the jackpot. Her new boyfriend is utterly perfect. He's charming, handsome, and works as a doctor at a local hospital. Sydney is swept off her feet. Enlightening!
I always knew I was different but I didn’t quite understand why. I remember as a child having a melt down at a grocery store when my mother asked me to choose a cereal. So many competing patterns and colors under those harsh lights created in me an overwhelming feeling of anxiety and an inability to decide. I call it “nerve fry”. The result of an overwhelmed nervous system and the inability to interpret and process the overwhelming amount of visual information coming in. This book helped me really understand the phenomenon and understand what’s happening in those moments. The book provides practical and easy to implement strategies for mitigating and dispersing visual input to calm the nervous system. It is helping me to take better care of myself. Every teacher, every parent and every psychologist should read or listen to this book. Enlightening!

This is a great book. Thank you. I have Irlen after a TBI. Nobody has diagnosed my sensory processing issues but I used to teach special education so I know I have it. Thank you.

A good start
This book offers an excellent introduction to Sensory Processing Disorder. I learned a number of sensitivities I wasn't aware were connected, things I've struggled with all my life that I thought were "just me being weird." Like my aversion to showers and baths, and difficulties with seatbelts.
It would be helpful if this were longer, and offered more ways to cope. The description mentioned these would be included, but it was barely touched upon.
The narrator is rather annoying, as every time he says "Sensory Processing Disorder" he sounds condescending.... As if he thinks the disorder is a joke, or "all in our heads." It's probably just the way narrators are trained to read these audiobooks, but I found it offensive and irritating, especially as a sufferer of SPD. He seemed very disconnected from the subject matter.
Overall, a worthwhile book, at least as a start.

Very basic information
If you are looking for very basic information, specifically the signs of sensory processing disorder and symptoms than this book fulfills that.
However, I think most people who come across this book already have this basic understanding.
If you are a parent like me, you may be hoping for information on how to help your child in with a sensory processing disorder and unfortunately you will not find it in this book. Please don't lose hope. There are many great resources and books available as well as online information to guide you to help your child.
