About this listen

The struggle is only beginning....

After escaping Earth and creating a new life on Salvation-1, Tessa thought her days of fighting were over. But nothing turned out the way the survivors expected, and now humanity is facing a new threat. One that may destroy them for good.

VA-246 was supposed to be humanity’s chance to start over, but making it there was only the beginning.

An alien planet, an atmosphere not conducive to human life, and an unknown enemy. With the fate of humanity on the line and disaster waiting around every corner, Tessa and the other survivors from Earth must fight for their survival. Except the enemy isn’t quite what they expected.

I need the next in the series now

This book kept me on the edge right till the end. The narration was done well and she sounded great. The writing was standard KL Mary that kept you on suspense and load you into thinking things were going to be great. Big twists big fights beautiful colors. I can’t wait for the next installment

A light philosophical undertone, great world build

Now on VA-246, Tessa and everyone from Salvation-1 have to face down the enemy for their only option of a second chance. The dice are stacked against humans surviving this fight until Tessa unwillingly comes across an unexpected ally.

As with another series by Kate (Species Traitor), this world shows the darkness that can be found in the human soul, and this time it is reflected right back at them in this alien planet. Tessa and the rest of humanity will have to find a solution or face extinction.

Kate also did a great job with the world building in this book, bringing to the readers an exotic and frightening new planet, bursting full of color and sound.

The narrator again was fine, although sometimes monotonous, I sped up the narration a bit so it was more upbeat.

Horrendous audio narrator

All Mary’s books have the worst audio narrators I’ve ever heard. Because they are clearly amateurs who unfortunately TRY to perform the characters. In this case the colonists have a “strange accent” (repeated enough times—like so many thing—to be really annoying) so instead of doing an accent, the narrator speaks in a soft, halting, high quavering voice—the same for both men and women—that sounds like a frail old person at death’s door.

And the constant repetition of the same phrases over and over. An editor (a professional one) would have caught these.

And the logic flaws…again, an editor would have caught them.

With her books (always very readable) it’s sometimes hard to hear the actual story through all the mess that could have been cleaned up with an editor and by using professional voice talent.

If I didn’t listen to so many audiobooks, I’m not sure I’d make it through hers. But she does tell a good story—except the zombie novels, though that’s personal preference.
