About this listen
In 1886, gifted surgeon Rye Rawlins is trapped by a tragic secret so painful that he denies his profession and buries himself in a gold mine in Montana Territory. But saving people is second nature, whether it’s doctoring a man mauled by a mountain lion or battling a wolf to save a child. Veterinarian and horse rancher Missouri Harper suffers through the worst winter in Montana history to provide for three beautiful sisters and an ailing aunt. Dangerous storms, privation, and wild predators make survival precarious.
Rye comes to Missouri's aid, putting his life in danger and Missouri in his debt. As they fall in love, his secret and her promise to remain a spinster to protect the land for her family force them to look within to discover the cost of love.
Rye's Reprieve was originally published as a Montana Sky Kindle world book.

Raised by guardians in Philadelphia, the Brinkman sisters have suddenly been bequeathed more than the truth about their late, estranged father - they've also inherited the Five Sisters Ranch, the dynasty he'd built for them in Eden, Colorado. It's theirs on one condition: to claim it, they must live on it for six months - a wilderness worlds away from the comforts of the city. Story
Union soldier John Chenneville suffered a traumatic head wound in battle. His recovery took the better part of a year as he struggled to regain his senses and mobility. By the time he returned home, the Civil War was over, but tragedy awaited. John’s beloved sister and her family had been brutally murdered. Their killer goes by many names. He fought for the North in the late unpleasantness, and wore a badge in the name of the law. But the man John knows as A. J. Dodd is little more than a rabid animal, slaughtering without reason or remorse, needing to be put down.

Story
Johnny Shooter was sentenced to hang at noon. But Judge Isaac Parker, widely known as the "Hanging Judge", made Johnny an offer he couldn't refuse. The judge made him a Deputy United State Marshal, then sent his new deputy after the worst-of-the-worst outlaws the Indian territory had to offer, with the orders not to burden the court by bringing them back for trial. Now, rumor has it that whenever outlaws gather around a campfire, the word is: "The only thing worse than standing before the Hanging Judge is hearing that Johnny Shooter is on your trail!"

Take a romantic trip back to 1890s Montana
Rye's Reprieve is a wonderful escape in these trying times. I loved the realistic descriptions of the difficult and at times dangerous life in Montana in the 1890s. I especially loved how the story revolved around the horses. The Harper girls are in for a shock when they make a surprise appearance on their aunt's ranch, only to find that their widowed aunt was hiding all her problems from the family. The ranch was falling into disrepair and their aunt was not well. It would take a lot of hard work and cooperation from the 4 sisters to whip the ranch into shape before winter. With only one hired hand, they would not have made it without the help of miner Rye. But Rye has a tragic secret from his past that makes him hide the fact that he is a doctor. The characters felt very genuine and realistic and I appreciated that the sisters were strong, intelligent and educated young women who knew their own minds. The tale is sweet and very romantic as Rye and the older sister and veterinarian Missouri must overcome the odds to forge a romance in difficult times. The narration was very good and it was easy to get lost in the story.

Loved it!
What a refreshing story to listen and enjoy! It had every emotions and I dearly loved hearing about the Montana folks again. Looking forward to hearing more from the characters that make up this book. Mary Castillo did a fine job of narrating it. This is the first time I have had the pleasure of listening to her and I am sure it won’t be the last.

A lovely romance!
I love going back to the 1800s and getting a peek at a time where things were simple, people cared about their neighbors and families were strong. This author has done her homework on this time period as her descriptions of the era and people were so vivid you could almost feel the cold from the snow storms. The reader definitely is caught up in the imaginings of the landscape, the way the characters dress and the thoughts and feelings of the characters. My heart broke for Rye's struggles as to the things going on his in life and what had brought him to the point where he had to hide who he really was to those around him. I loved the heroine of the story as she definitely was one strong woman who felt responsible for her sisters and their aunt in making her aunt's ranch livable again. The author has written a great plot for our hero and heroine to fall in love and live happily ever after but they definitely had to go through some rough patches before they found their way. A very lovely romance.
