Publisher's summary

The Civil War took everything from Ruth Stallings except for her grandmother and sisters. Now without a home or funds, they take the White River as far as it will go and end up in Painted Bluff, Arkansas, a town populated mostly by men out looking for a wife. Sheriff John Powell wants nothing to do with the pretty women or the trouble they bring, especially when a gang of marauders show up looking for Ruth. Can Ruth and John overcome their differences and find love?

Good story of a strong woman

This audio book was given to me in exchange for an honest review. This is a Christian romance based around the time of the end of the Civil War. Ruth's parents have been killed by a bunch of men in an assortment of uniforms. When she goes after the men to try to retrieve the money they stole at the same time, something happens that will send her on the run. She then loads her sisters and grandmother onto a river boat to put some distance between her and the men. They end up in a little town in Arkansas. She meets the sheriff, John, who is immediately attracted to her. Unfortunately, Ruth isn't interested in romance in the least. Will the gang of men find Ruth and her family? Will she ever return John's interest?
Aside from a few editing issues, this was a totally enjoyable listen. Ruth is a very strong female character, which is great. The story moves quickly and certainly kept my attention. The narration by Margo Trueblood was good. I especially liked her voices for the older women.

Redemption or Renewal ? Either is Great

Sheriff John wants nothing to do with the pretty Ruth , and Ruth doesn’t trust men. Her parents’ murders are chasing her and her sisters, and Sheriff John’s town is a safe haven.

The plot is good, characters are lovable but the research is sparse. The spiritual truth in this book is really about trusting God. This author shares spiritual truth better than most. Perhaps Ruth’s renewal is closer to the actual fact. Grief throws so Christians for a loop.

A few details are missing. I kept asking where are they getting their meat, vegetables and fruit to feed all of these men who come to their restaurant. Also the author comments on how everyone in the town once had slaves. The fact is only 1% of all Americans owned slaves and 1% of that percent were black slave owners. I loved Moses. Great character.

The narrator is excellent. I hope Cynthia Hickey continues to create fun, real characters in historical romance novels. Good read.

another wonderful christian book

I loved this book. two stubborn people who finally fall in love...the sherriff and the gal who came to town with her grandmother and two younger sisters. grandmother has fallen in love with man her age and they get married after helping the gal and the two sisters.....they had escaped with their lives after marraders killed their parents and burned their house to the ground at civil war time. book has twists and turns as marraders follow them to arkansas to wreak revenge... the gal has a prickley tough exterior while housing a soft heart of pure gold. book has a few other great surprises along with the trials of trying to stay alive. narrator had a lot of breath sounds, but I got used to them as story progressed...all in all I highly recommend this book and can't wait to listen to the next book in series. and yahoo no illicit sex.

Well Written

I don’t usually read many books from this genre, but I really enjoyed this one. The narration brought the story to life and held my interest throughout. The story was well thought out, complete and will keep you listening. I will be watching for this author in the future.

Enjoyable Listen

Narration - Margo Trueblood, narration was pretty good, production could be improved. There's some duplicate "takes" throughout the production and weird breath sounds, but the narration voice and her character voices are good!

The story was enjoyable! It takes place after the civil war and some bands of misfit soldiers are still wandering about. Ruth hears gun shots while out hunting and finds that one of these groups of men have attacked her home, ransacked, robbed and lit it on fire. She goes after them, gets her families money back, but not without some altercation and now, she's on the run with her sisters and grandma.

They end up in a small mountain town to make a fresh start and the group of beautiful women quickly have the entire town smitten, including the sheriff!

Ruth seems to have disaster upon disaster following her and she's really turned her back on her faith. Sheriff John, makes it his mission to help her find her way back to God.

There are lots of twists and turns, some OMG moments, and a very sweet romance. A very enjoyable listen.

This book was just ok for me, I think the writing was good and so was the narration, I just don't get in to this kind of genre.

A tale of woe for a stubborn, strong female protagonist . A male protagonist that needs to protect her. Story flows well.

The narration was good,
