About this listen

From the author of White Trash Warlock and Dark Moon Shallow Sea, Rogue Community College is a delightful fantasy full of magic and mayhem …

Isaac Frost is an assassin. Raised in the Graveyard of the cruel and mysterious Undertaker, he has mastered the deadly art of the knife and the skill of survival, together with scores of others just like him—young men taken from their families to become the most infamous killers throughout the realms of elves and humans. But Isaac is unique: a single drop of another’s blood can confer upon him the knowledge and power of friend and foe alike.

After crossing paths with the elf queen Argent, Isaac is sent to a strange magical school for wayward practitioners in the hopes that he can learn where he—and his unusual talent—fit in the world. Isaac is charmed by the school’s chaotic nature and finds himself unexpectedly drawn to Vran, a Sea Elf haunted by secret knowledge.

But Vran isn’t the only one with secrets, and Isaac’s arrival is no accident. The Undertaker has charged him with infiltrating the school for the purpose of destroying it utterly, and his future rests on completing his mission—before the Undertaker takes matters into his own hands.

Love this series.

I really want to go back and start the whole series over and read them all together. This was great and sort of sad but I completely loved all of it.

Fantastic world building and characters

Full disclosure, I have already read all of the Adam Binder books, and this one is a spinoff from that series. That said, I fell in love with Isaac and Vran in this novel! And not only their story (which is the focus) but the author introduces many new characters to the world. The class and the teachers are all so intriguing that it made this story a “page turner” for me. I became very emotionally invested while listening to this (the ending!!) but in the best way. I can’t wait to read the next. I hope there will be more!?

Fantastic writing

I love David’s books. Every book he writes is better than the last. This story about a college for gifted people was his best yet. I can’t wait to see where these characters go next!

Great listen, love to hear more of the universe, but feels too YA at times

The author tells great stories but he shys away from intimacy in his characters and it’s obnoxious. I’m not asking for explicit material but just a well written fade to black moment would be fine. For two grown adults to abstain for no reason other than a very teen sitcom-y “I’m not ready” just breaks immersion and belief. What gay man would honestly say that? I also feel the ending was too heavy handed. I can’t see them honestly rejecting Isaac for killing in self defense. I think the author just wanted a reason to jerk the reader’s emotions and to show the school was more alive than they believed.

Action, emotion, and a cool premise!

Isaac is a great main character and Vran…no spoilers, but wow! The writing is propulsive and the action doesn’t let up. I can’t wait to read more books in this world!

Another Great Book by David R. Slaton!

I love this book! It is another great book by David R. Slayton. During the last couple of years he has become my favorite living author.

Each release is equal to its predecessors. I find each book to be a great story, have characters who are interesting and who develop throughput their stories, and each story is well-crafted and smart in so many ways. Slayton's books are the equal of or superior to any of my life-long favorite popular authors such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, and others.

RCC takes place in the world of the Adam Binder series, but this book can be read alone. This book has a new hero. It takes place in a magical school. For my tastes this is an exciting and satisfying book.

I recommend the book because it is fine and I think others will enjoy it. My selfish reason for urging others to read Slayton is because the more books he sells the more likely more will be written and published. I plan to read and reread any books that David R. Slayton writes in the future.

I want to mention that the reading performances of Michael David Axtell for all Slayton's books are a perfect choice. His readings are lively, have the range necessary to provide different voices for the cast of characters in the books, and they add to the listener's experience of each novel.

The best characters!

Okay, first let me say that I love David R. Slayton’s writing and I think where he really excels is character creation. I adore these characters. Argent may be one of my favorite characters of any book ever…and I’m also a big fan of Vran. This book felt like sort of an introduction to the school and characters more than anything else. There was plot but not a whole lot was going on until the end…which was…what?!? I hope there’s more in this series because I cannot be left hanging like this!! I honestly could have handled this book being a little longer. It didn’t seem as action packed as the Adam Binder series, but again maybe it was because it’s an introduction. But most importantly more Vran! #endrant
