About this listen

Neryn has finally found the rebel group at Shadowfell, and now her task is to seek out the elusive Guardians, vital to her training as a Caller.

These four powerful beings have been increasingly at odds with human kind, and Neryn must prove her worth to them. She desperately needs their help to use her gift without compromising herself or the cause of overthrowing the evil King Keldec.

Neryn must journey with the tough and steadfast Tali, who looks on Neryn's love for the double agent Flint as a needless vulnerability. And perhaps it is. What Flint learns from the king will change the battlefield entirely-but in whose favor, no one knows.

Beautiful, magical, and earthy

I’ve finished the trilogy weeks ago, and I’m still missing these characters. Neryn is a gentle hero, confident is her own ways of contributing to the cause. This is in contrast to some other heroins who are unrealistic or begrudging of their abilities. There are some very dark themes, as in all of Juliette Marillier’s books, but there is always something good that grows from the darkness, and love always prevails. This is a series that leaves the reader deeply satisfied.

Possibly the best narrator out there

I love Juliet Marillier, but this narrator adds depth and complexity to the story that you must listen to. 10/10, would recommend to anyone.

Love, fae and rebellion

I’ve been fan of this author since I discovered Daughter of the Forest in 2006. Some of her books can be slow in places. Not this one. Some can be for younger audiences (not this) & some very much for adults. I’m a middle aged woman. I love that the style is rich and lush with beautiful prose. Includes romance that is realistic in development with depth. You can always count on excellent writing, developed characters and strong female leads with diverse back stories and personalities. I can recommend almost all of her books. This series is good. It does have some adult themes. Recommend for older teens, YA and up. This one has the intensity of taking place in a time of rebellion under a cruel despot and features fae characters interacting with humans as all of her stories do. Enjoyable. I had already read this series but purchased audible for my re-read. I REALLY hope they make an audible of third/final book soon.

Great Characters and Plot

This series is a great fantasy series. I like that the main character has weaknesses.

Huge Disappointment

I don't know who wrote this and what happened to Juliet Marillier, but perhaps the author was just in a deep funk while writing. I have enjoyed most of her other works, but this was not the story of lively adventure I had hoped for. Instead the poor characters dragged on and on through drudgery, ruthlessness, unending misery with hardly ever an uplifting line. In these days of fear and anger all around, what I was looking for was a hopeful, uplifting fantasy. Then to add insult to injury, the book just blam, ended. No conclusion, no thoughtful or satisfying closure, it just ended! I was so shocked I couldn't believe it. The whole story was leading towards overthrowing the thrown, but no! We didn't even get the gratification of knowing what happens to the main characters, leaving an empty feeling of disappointment and sadness.
