Publisher's summary

New York Times bestseller Jasmine Walt returns with this first book in a brand-new fantasy series, perfect for fans of slow-burn romance, thrilling adventures, and awe-inspiring worlds...

A fae with impossible magic.

Adara has been an outsider for as long as she can remember. Born and raised in the earth fae realm, she's a water fae who can't control her magic, making her not just useless but downright dangerous at times.

When a training mishap accidentally unleashes a hidden magic inside her, Adara suddenly finds herself on the run. The king wants to use her powers for nefarious reasons, and he'll stop at nothing to obtain her—including kidnapping and torturing Adara's mother.

A dragon awoken from slumber.

As the last of his kind, Einar wants nothing to do with the kingdom of Ediria or its problems. The fae hunted his kind to extinction, and he harbors only hatred for them in his heart.

But when a beautiful fae female awakens him from an enchanted slumber, Einar is reluctantly ensnared. And while he would rather die than submit to any fae, every fiber of his body screams to claim her as his own.

A kingdom corrupted by darkness.

The last thing Adara and Einar want to do is join forces, no matter how scorching the passion between them is. But a dark magic is sweeping through the land, rotting the kingdom from the inside out. And if the two cannot put aside the centuries-old feud between their races, they will lose everything they hold dear...

If you like steamy, slow-burn romance, heart-pounding elemental duels, and unmatched world-building, then you'll love Promised in Fire.

Good but not sure I'll continue the series

I enjoyed Promised in Fire. I think the female narrator, Bridget Bordeaux, was great. The male narrator was a bit too intense and it was kind of a distraction for me from the story. I was thinking in my mind more about the narrator than the story. However, the male narrator did soften his tone later in the book, making it less of an issue towards the end.

Elements I enjoyed were: slow burn (it's realllllly slow); hidden magic; hidden origins/past; world building; fated mates; a dark essence threatening everyone; variety of magic.

Definitely worth the listen

Unexpected plot twist and great banter. The narration is beautifully done and we have a protective and broody MMC.

Amazing and entertaining

The performance was amazing and the story was written really well, Even if there was a few predictable outcomes, it still had a lot of twists and turns and you could really feel the characters emotions in the performance.

Loved the book!!I am obsessed with ACOTAR and Fourth wing and this is the first book since them I have actually wanted to finish. Great read. Not my favorite narrators but you get use to them.

A bit juvenile

The writing was a bit on the juvenile side and the FMC a bit too petulant for my liking. I could see lots of good thoughts that just weren’t flushed out well. Things just fell into place too easily and conveniently to be believable, even in a fantasy world. Seemed like a writers first draft of their first novel. I’ve already purchased the rest so I hope they get better.

Not my favorite

I’m on an ACOTAR hangover and this was recommended, the story itself wasn’t terrible, although predictable… I really struggled with the way the dialogue was written, it just didn’t feel natural. On top of it I was not a fan the female voice actor’s performance. It felt whiny and left me wondering if she gave herself voice damage trying to sound so upset all the time. It was almost a ‘valley girl’ type of inflection. I just couldn’t get into it. And I’m not one to ever write reviews but this was just bad…

Overhyped underwhelming

Let’s start out with the narrators. The males voice in the prologue was very intense. But once you got past that, he seemed to even out and was a lot better by the end of the story. The combination of the female and male narrator was a delightful change and enjoyed the combo a lot.

The story was OK at best. It seemed like it was avatar the last Airbender rewritten in dragon fairy form. They have earth, fire, wind, and water Fae. The Fae fire is no more, which was repeated more than once. FMC is of course, the last of the fire Fae with water powers. MMC is a dragon who is just grumpy all the time and seems the only reason he’s there is to get the FMC out of trouble. The slow burn on this is basically nonexistent. By the end of the book
characters are still in the same emotional state that they were in the first few chapters after they met. FMC is young and immature while the MMC is constantly creating misunderstandings. One good chapter of communication would’ve cleared up so much.

The only saving grace for this book was the secondary characters. They were far more interesting than the two main leads. Even the villains had more going for them. I will not be reading the second nor the third book. It’s just isn’t that good.

Overdramatization

Adara’s voice was whiny and dramatic in every single scene vs. just when it was appropriate. The over dramatization made the book feel emotionally exhausting vs. exciting and suspenseful.
