Publisher's summary

A short story set in the small, fictional town of Now, Indiana, circa 1940. A man, Troy, returns to his hometown after 10 years when he is diagnosed with cancer in his prime. Distraught, Troy visits a local antique store on Halloween night, hoping to find something to comfort him in his last weeks.

He stumbles across a painting so compelling, he must have it at all cost - he must have it...now! Soon, Troy learns there is something more to the painting than for which he bargained. Something diabolical.

Short, intense and creepy

Another short story to creep me out. I love it! Short and just creepy enough to leave me feeling a little odd by the time it was over. I love a book that leaves me with an odd feeling and something to think about. The narration of this book was fantastic!! I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

short but pretty good

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The premise seems, on the surface, to be a modern take on the Portrait of Dorian Grey. It has clear influences from it, but it is definitely it's own story. One I found I rather quite liked. It has good creep-factor and is well narrated. I would recommend for anyone looking for a unique and interesting horror story.

Enjoyable, if implausible

A bit of ghost, bit of horror, "Price of Now" is an enjoyable short tale about a terminally-ill man who begins to have a bit of trouble with a painting he's picked up.

The protagonist's medical situation, becomes a bit incredulous and seems designed only to position him where the writer needed. You're already suspending disbelief in a supernatural tale, but that bit just seemed a bit silly.

The narrator did a pretty good job though, and overall I can recommend it for a quick listen. There were some things left a bit unexplained, and overall it's not super memorable, but it's good enough to pass the time on a commute.

I was provided this audiobook free of charge in exchange for my honest review.

Gem of a find!

Given my reluctance for short stories, I am always looking for good ones. I am glad to say I found one in “Price of Now”. This horror tale grabbed me and held my interest from the opening paragraph. There is a bit of Hitchcock or Twilight Zone suggested here. I love the tale and am happy to find talented short story writers. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

Loved this story!

Halfway in, you will wonder what is this book about; but it is a gem. No spoilers, but it is a creepy little read and I absolutely loved the ending!
The narrator was first class and I enjoyed listening to his work.
I prefer shorter stories and listen while commuting, this book was perfect for me.

Holds you attention

Short, but now always sweet. Troy finds out he has cancer and returns to his hometown where he finds an unusual shop. He purchases a piece of wall art and is told to hang it immediately. As in any good horror, he sets the picture aside to hang tomorrow. What happens next will keep you listening to the end!

Krage Brown will keep you on the edge of your seat with excellent narration.

Creepy

Creepy story that reminds you of an episode of the twilight zone. It has the same mysterious and dark feeling.

Price of Now

Troy Price returns to his hometown of Now, Indiana, after a diagnosis of cancer. When he wanders into an antique shop in search of the perfect item, he selects a portrait of the town's founder. The only instructions he is given is to immediately return home and hang the portrait in the perfect place. Of course, like all stupid horror story characters, Troy doesn't heed this advice and soon wonders what he has brought into his home.

This story, although short, is absolutely creepy! The perfect Halloween read when you want to be frightened just enough to give yourself a few nightmares. The ending was unexpected and I will remember this one for a long time. The narrator did a perfect job and added a lot to my enjoyment. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.

Creepy Little Short

This is a creepy little short story where a man suddenly faced with the prospect of his own mortality makes a rash decision, fails to follow through, and faces the consequences of his actions. That outline can stand in for a lot of stories, but in this one the setting and object of the horror is an interesting take, and when you think you know the ending the author has another twist to throw back at you.

Narration is done well, and aided in the story telling.

Not your father's Dorian Grey

Troy Price is terminally ill. He decides to return to his hometown in Now, Indiana after a decade's absence, despite his family having all passed away. While there, he discovers a strange antique shop, and decides to seek something unique to help combat his waxing depression. A painting catches his eye, and despite the exorbitant price tag of $10,ooo (this is set in 1940), he springs for it. He brings it to his parents now derelict house, and then things start to get weird.

This is a rather engaging short story, with a nice job done by the narrator (it's an audiobook), although he sure doesn't sound like he's from Indiana. The plot moves nicely, and while your never likely to poop your pants, the double ending - yes, double - is well worth your time. I'll have to investigate more of this author's works.
