Publisher's summary

This audiobook includes an exclusive piece, written by Helen Fields, on the development of DI Callanach’s character throughout the series.

When silence falls, who will hear their cries?

The body of a young girl is found dumped on the roadside on the outskirts of Edinburgh. When pathologists examine the remains, they make a gruesome discovery: the outline of a doll carved into the victim’s skin.

DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are struggling to find leads in the case until a doll made of skin is found nestled beside an abandoned baby.

After another young woman is found butchered, Luc and Ava realise the babydoll killer is playing a horrifying game. And it’s only a matter of time before he strikes again. Can they stop another victim from being silenced forever - or is it already too late?

Critic reviews

"Relentless pace, devilish cleverness and a laser-sharp focus on plot." (Chris Brookmyre)

"Must read! With nail-biting twists at every turn, [Perfect Remains] will have readers gripped from start to finish." (Closer)

"Read it in two sittings. I literally had no choice. A fast and enthralling thriller, pitting a new, very human hero against one of the scariest psychos I've yet encountered in crime fiction." (Sunday Times best seller Paul Finch)

Intriguing and extremely well written

Another amazing book by Helen Fields, performed splendidly by Robin Laing. I highly recommend this series of D. I. Callanach murder mysteries. Ms. Fields expertly weaves the story which always leaves me longing for more.

Helen did it again!

This was a tough read at times due to some of the horrific events. But like any other train wreck shall I say. I could not stop listening.

nothing but praise

these are some of my favorite books. I love how the investigate more than one crime in each book and I also love how unique and twisted these cases are. I also appreciate that in the end it's never a happy ending. there is so much that happens. And the narrator I feel there should be some award for his performance he does each character so well I forget that I am listening to one man read a book.

Another great one!

Love this series! Very well written. Interesting and likeable main characters, as well as interesting plots. Would be a great British television series as well. Haven't checked to see whether it already is. On to the next book.

Love this narrator & author

GET NARRATOR & I’m a narrator snob!
I stumbled across this author & I’m hooked. The characters have depth & are relatable while the plot was everything I wanted!! Even tho I did figure some of the story out there were still s few surprises in the end! I highly recommend this series!

Fabulous series

I truly love this series. Not so much the murders - yes, more than one - but the characters, the process, the interactions are all amazing. And the feelings! So much emotional reaction. From sadness to laugh out loud.

The narration is growing on me. I especially like how Robin Laing “does” Ben.

I need more of Luc and Ava et al.

Delightfully Dark, But...

This novel is well done and well read as always. The notes below will likely not be read but are for the author, her editors, or her publisher.

One of the reasons I adore this author so much is because her work is not riddled with errors like so many of her contemporaries. In the last two books, there have been some minor errors. For example, in what I believe was the last novel, two characters followed up on aspects of the case they had not been looped into whatsoever. In this (novel’s) case, an ancillary character from a previous novel jokes about needing an apology from one of the major characters. Equally that major character keeps referencing how this ancillary character must hate her. And yet in the previous novel, she was the one who warned him about a raid at his home. (Why would she apologize for warning him?) So that clearly doesn’t make sense. Equally, I believe it was Dr. Spur In the first novel who sent whiskey to Ava. And yet, it is Ava who is being introduced to Dr Spur in this novel??? Perplexing. Last but not least, there was a huge episode in one of the last two novels in which one character was reunited with his mother and yet, there’s no reference to the mother again, particularly odd as this novel ends during the holidays. Compared to many of the author’s peers, there are very few mistakes. I’m just disappointed to start seeing so many little ones here and there.
