Acerca de esta escucha

“Funny, sharp explications of what these sometimes not-very-nice women were up to, and how they sometimes made idiots of . . . but read on!”—Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid's Tale

The national bestselling author of A Thousand Ships returns with a fascinating, eye-opening take on the remarkable women at the heart of classical stories Greek mythology from Helen of Troy to Pandora and the Amazons to Medea.

The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

In Pandora’s Jar, the broadcaster, writer, stand-up comedian, and passionate classicist turns the tables, putting the women of the Greek myths on an equal footing with the men. With wit, humor, and savvy, Haynes revolutionizes our understanding of epic poems, stories, and plays, resurrecting them from a woman’s perspective and tracing the origins of their mythic female characters. She looks at women such as Jocasta, Oedipus’ mother-turned-lover-and-wife (turned Freudian sticking point), at once the cleverest person in the story and yet often unnoticed. She considers Helen of Troy, whose marriage to Paris “caused” the Trojan war—a somewhat uneven response to her decision to leave her husband for another man. She demonstrates how the vilified Medea was like an ancient Beyonce—getting her revenge on the man who hurt and betrayed her, if by extreme measures. And she turns her eye to Medusa, the original monstered woman, whose stare turned men to stone, but who wasn’t always a monster, and had her hair turned to snakes as punishment for being raped.

Pandora’s Jar brings nuance and care to the millennia-old myths and legends and asks the question: Why are we so quick to villainize these women in the first place—and so eager to accept the stories we’ve been told?

I have never seen this perspective and it's absolutely breath taking. This book is a gift to anyone who reads it!

I loved Natalie Haynes' wit and humor in both writing and performance. I will read anything she writes.

Great listen!

I am so glad I bought this. What a gem. It was a well thought out, well told analysis of stories that mention Greek women(Goddesses and human)we thought we'd learned all about through the books or classes that taught us Greek Mythology. Or at least Male Greek Mythology which the Romans retold. A fresh and well documented look at what was really going on with Helen, Medea, Medusa, Pandora and Penelope and others. While scholarly, Haynes has a dry wit that she sprinkles throughout the work. Be prepared to bark out loud with laughter as you listen. I would highly recommend this become the de facto text to accompany all other texts in classes teaching about or introducing students to Greek Mythology and legends.

A book to share with our daughters

Hearing Haynes read her own writing made all the difference. There were double meanings and emphases I would have never picked up on by reading myself, or with any other narrator. I loved every second of the book!

This was an incredible book with just a wonderful mixed, multiple perspective telling of popular myths focusing on the women we never. Get to know well enough. I loved hearing about the ancient writers versions of these tales - some later obscured to be brought back into the light. Loved the chapters on Medea and Penelope, esp learning that Medea was the source of Deus ex machina (and Helios was that god not Zeus), and enjoyed hearing the multiple versions of Pandora esp. re the shape, size, and fragility of that jar indeed. Fantastic narration by the author who should always narrate her own books. Thanks!

Incredible book, heroic narration!

and about time. It’s refreshing to read (or listen) to not so much a different point of view but rather some key details from the originals. It’s nice to know that while the women were often treated as if invisible (or at best opaque), that it wasn’t every version. It makes me dream of different, modern versions of these ancient stories that could be read by girls and boys that teach the importance of the lessons without dismissing the bad behavior as if ok if perpetrated by boys and monstrous if by a girl. It would also be fairly nifty if when things like abductions and rape, the reader is made to feel the pain of the victim rather than excise the behavior- the boys will be boys nonsense.
This is cracking the door to a new way to view our old understandings of our past and hopefully shine some light on a new way to move forward.

Brilliant….

From scholarship to narration, she is divine. Classics reconsidered and connections made between past and present culture in clear, precise, often hilarious prose.
