About this listen

The Survivors' Club: Six men and one woman, all wounded in the Napoleonic Wars, their friendship forged during their recovery at Penderris Hall in Cornwall. Now, in the fourth novel of the Survivors' Club series, Flavian, Viscount Ponsonby, has left this refuge to find his own salvation - in the love of a most unsuspecting woman. Flavian, Viscount Ponsonby, was devastated by his fiancée’s desertion after his return home. Now the woman who broke his heart is back - and everyone is eager to revive their engagement. Except Flavian, who, in a panic, runs straight into the arms of a most sensible yet enchanting young woman. Agnes Keeping has never been in love - and never wishes to be. But then she meets the charismatic Flavian, and suddenly Agnes falls so foolishly and so deeply that she agrees to his impetuous proposal of marriage. When Agnes discovers that the proposal is only to avenge his former love, she’s determined to flee. But Flavian has no intention of letting his new bride go, especially now that he too has fallen so passionately and so unexpectedly in love.

A Most Enjoyable Finale to a Great Series

George and Dora's story is my favorite of the Survivor's Club. The Duke of Standbrook was always an important character woven through the series but his story is really the most heartbreaking and I had hoped for a happy ending for Agnes' sister, Dora from the earlier book. I enjoyed all the books in the series with great characters and their stories.

I loved this book

I don’t normally write reviews, but I adored this book. The narrator helped bring this book to life and it is so well written. I’ve loved this entire series so far but I loved this book.

Balogh Delivers!

Mary Balogh delivers another wonderfully written story in her Survivor's Club series. Listening to a Balogh titled narrated by Rosalyn Landor is a treat. In this title, Flavian is visiting his friend Vincent, another member Survivor, when he meets a local widow Agnes Keeping. Agnes and Vincent rub each other wrong at first, but Flavian decides she exudes a calmness that he appreciates. Flavian suffered a head wound during the war and and spent several years learning how to speak again and control his frustration. Flavian still has a stutter; Landor does a fantastic job with the portraying the stutter. When Agnes and Flavian marry, they both discover the hold the past can have on you when you haven't truly addressed it. I really enjoyed the exploration of this theme in through both Flavian and Agnes's past. Flavian had a gap in his memory that has to filled before he can come to terms before he can truly deal with his brother's death. Agnes learns just because something is ignored, the effect on a person still greatly influences the future. Balogh uses such beautiful prose throughout the story that it makes listening to the story a treat for the ears. I am looking forward to the remaining titles in this series with great anticipation.

Good except for the Insta lust/love

I enjoyed Flavion's character and witty banter. I feel like their story thus far had the most amount of passionate scenes although it mostly came out when they were arguing. The steamy scenes were not really steamy but just the author alluding to them having sex multiple times a night to just emphasize how sexual Flavion was but few details. I only had an issue with how Agnes fell in love with him after one dance where they barely spoke and then Flavion was instantly attracted and lusting after her on their second meeting but couldn't give one reason outside of bedding her as to why he wanted to marry her. I know he had speech and mental issues due to injuries but it seemed unrealistic that Agnes would accept that whether she secretly loved him or not.

Enchanting

The hero has a speech impediment - he stutters. The narrator does a nice job with the stutter and it doesn’t get too disruptive when listening to this book. As the other books in this series, I think it goes on too long. There is repetition of dialogue which is too redundant and unnecessary. I know it is the character reliving the dialogue and thinking on it but it just drags things out. Agnes is a complicated character but unlike other characters the author has drawn is disjointed. She is usually calm but she can really tear into her new husband and rip him a new one then calms down in just a moment when he explains why he’s done something. She would be hard to live with and I would not be surprised if he decided to eventually live apart or at least a different bedroom although when she’s sleeping she does leave him peace. He’s the one that is supposed to be unpredictable. The truth is she’s more unpredictable than he is. It just doesn’t seem they are made for each other as some of the author’s other characters in other books are. The story is finally resolved and they haven’t killed each other yet but it does leave you wondering what the next 10 years might bring.

A good one.

A great book to continue the Survivors' stories. This may be my favorite so far. Agnes and Flavian are mature characters and it's good too see them deal with problems directly. Very refreshing. I had a bit of distraction about a quarter of the way through with other characters but that passed and it might have been just me. I love the way the author makes each story unique. I look forward to more. And, as usual, Rosalyn Landor's narration was spot on!

2nd Chances

Another great survivors book by Mary Balogh. Flavian went mad when he came home from the war. He spent 3 years recovering. He had blanks in his memory from that time. While he was on his 3 weeks visit with his other survivors he meets Agnes again. When his mother and sisters want him to marry and they tell him his ex-finance is just our of morning. He knows he will not marry her since she married his best friend while he was recovering. He then asks Agnes to marry him. She agrees but then finds out that she married her our of revenge. Things are not what they seem as he begins to remember things from his past. Another great read!

One of my favourites in an excellent series.

I am enjoying all in this series ( the first one is my least favourite) with this the best so far. I like the characters, their honesty, the backdrop of a yearly meeting of supportive friends - it all works for me.
