PI Nikki Griffin - a badass bookseller who punishes abusers - is back in S. A. Lelchuk's One Got Away....

Nikki Griffin, a private-investigator when she isn’t running her small bookstore, is on a case. The matriarch of one of the wealthiest San Francisco families has been defrauded by a con-man, and her furious son enlists Nikki to find the money. And find the con-man.

Nikki isn’t a fan of men who hurt women. Her secret mission, born of revenge and trauma, is to do everything she can to remove women from dangerous situations - and to punish the men responsible.

As Nikki follows the trail toward the con-man, she realizes that no one involved is telling her the whole truth. When the case overlaps with her attempt to protect a woman in trouble, and Nikki’s own life is put in danger, Nikki has to make terrible choices about who to save - and how to keep herself alive.

The characters were interesting, the plot was different, it was a bit violent here and there but not gratuitously so. All in all, solid writing, great narration.

Different- interesting plot - good pace

There something about the character righting wrongs and helping battered and abused people that makes this so great. This character is a real bad ass!! I can’t wait for the 3rd book. Please tell me there’s will be more books!! January LaVoy is an excellent narrator!!

I'd read, and thoroughly, enjoyed Lelchuk's debut, Save Me From Dangerous Men, and this novel is an incredibly good second outing for the resourceful Nikki Griffin. This is a great performance (I truly don't know how actors like January LaVoy do what they do; incredible). But this is also a great mystery thriller. The story demonstrates true intelligence; the actions are reasonable, not superhuman. The characters are developed with economy and skill. And Lelchuk has a great sense of style; he's a writer who has clearly read and absorbed good prose. (If there's a single criticism – and it's a minor one – sometimes he milks joke-y chitchat a bit too long. The Mercedes car salesman in this novel stays on-stage a tad too long; Griffin's boyfriend also gets tiresome. They are both supposed to be a bit tiresome, but still.)

This series should attract the attention of show runners and production execs at the major streaming services; with the right actress handling Nikki Griffin, either novel would make a great 8-part series.

Just superb all around.

A perfect mystery-thriller...

Overall enjoyed this one. It seemed disjointed but at the end, the author brought it all together. Maybe a bit abruptly, but it all came together for a good read. Can’t wait for the next installment.

Nikki kicks butt again
