Now, bestselling author Dr. Sarah Ballantyne throws all of that out the window in favor of a simple yet radical idea: choose foods to meet our nutritional needs. Unlock health and vitality with Nutrivore, a transformative guide that navigates the world of nutrition, dispels diet myths, and empowers you to embrace a nutrient-focused lifestyle tailored to your unique needs.

What they don't know is that these pollutants cause a deficiency that can make us sick, fat, and stupid. Iodized salt - supposedly a solution to iodine deficiency - is actually a nutritional scam that provides a false sense of security. The Iodine Crisis explains how we became so deficient, then shows the time-tested solution to reversing many conditions.

Our ability to prevent and reverse these conditions—and feel incredible today—is under our control and simpler than we think. The key is our metabolic function—the most important and least understood factor in our overall health. As Dr. Casey Means explains in this book, nearly every health problem we face can be explained by how well the cells in our body create and use energy. To live free from frustrating symptoms and life-threatening disease, we need our cells to be optimally powered so that they can create “good energy,” the essential fuel that impacts every aspect of our wellbeing.

A groundbreaking guide to the surprising source of good health. Genetics and lifestyle are thought to be the two most important determinants of good health. But that is not the whole story. We have a second genome, our gut bacteria, that sets the dial on our bodies. Unlike our DNA, we can influence the gut bacteria, or microbiota, to optimize all aspects of our health. In The Good Gut, noted Stanford researchers Justin and Erica Sonnenburg investigate how the trillions of microbes that reside in our gastrointestinal tract help define us.

Your autonomic nervous system is responsible for the constant but mostly subconscious communication between your brain and body. When you experience stress, anxiety, or trauma, your nervous system formulates responses to keep you alive. But you can also become trapped in survival mode if you’re consistently exposed to unsafe environments, toxic relationships, or destructive thought patterns. Mind-body practitioners Jen Mann and Karden Rabin now provide the first in-depth look at nervous system regulation, somatic therapy, Polyvagal theory, the vagus nerve, and the mind-body connection.

Story
Until the twentieth century, scientists investigating the effects of drugs on the mind did so by experimenting on themselves. Vivid descriptions of drug experiences sparked insights across the mind sciences, pharmacology, medicine, and philosophy. But after 1900 drugs were increasingly viewed as a social problem, and the long tradition of self-experimentation began to disappear. Mike Jay brilliantly recovers a lost intellectual tradition of drug-taking that fed the birth of psychology, the discovery of the unconscious, and the emergence of modernism.

Nutrition made easy
This audiobook was fantastic and is already helping me heal my relationship with food. Dr Sarah summarizes the latest nutritional science in an easy to understand format, it’s invaluable information from thousands of studies and meta analyses. I especially loved the section on illnesses/deficiencies, it’s like a roadmap for how best to protect yourself and loved ones by maximizing your nutrition, no matter how you like to eat. Her no judgement, non biased attitude toward nutrition is a refreshing and much needed arrival in the chaotic world of food today. Take the guess work out of your nutrition and listen to this book. 10/10

This book is uplifting
I'm enjoying listening to this audiobook so much. I got it in addition to a hard copy. I think the author does a great job narrating. Her voice, and the content of the book, is positive and uplifting, and moves along at a good pace. The PDF that accompanies the book is a really helpful resource. I like that I can print out the charts. My family has diverse dietary preferences, and this book does a great job at accommodating those preferences while teaching us new ways to boost nutrient intake within those frameworks.

Loving it overall but needs some work to be useful
I'm about halfway through. The book is an easy listen, even despite the author's proclivity for bad puns. She cites numerous studies and gives the most up-to-date nutritional information that fits her bias - basically citing the ways various foods support health. She makes it clear up front that this is not the book to read to determine how some foods may be bad for you.
I won't say I'm learning anything groundbreaking - basically, eat a wide variety of foods of all colors and varying animal sources. Everything in moderation. She's created a "nutrivore score" which is pretty much the percent of RDA of a variety of nutrients divided by the calorie content of the food. It's not a bad way of looking at things, but ends up being skewed by low-calorie foods which are only nutrient dense *per calorie* not overall. Iceberg lettuce, for instance, scores pretty high. And other foods which are nutrient dense but calorie heavy score lower, like nuts. So you can't use the scale to simply choose the best foods. It takes some detective work.
My biggest issue, however, is that her units of measure are all over the place. I realize that she's citing studies where the units might be either standard or metric, but it would be extremely helpful for her to convert everything so we're dealing with one system and can compare apples to apples, so to speak. And don't get me started on "a tablespoon" of this or "a cup" of that. Even her PDF that accompanies the audiobook talks about "one cup" of shiitake mushrooms having the largest amount of ergothioneine. Great - is that a cup of whole mushrooms, sliced, diced, chopped, or what? Give me a weight!!!! I can work with a weight. I even vote for grams, and I'm an American! Volumetric measurements lead to vast discrepancies. Give the volume as an aside, if you must. ie: "100 grams of blueberries, roughly 3/4 cup." By knowing the gram measurement, I can use jumbo blueberries or tiny blueberries and know that I'm getting the amount cited in the study.
Also, the information is kind of all over the place. I'd like to be concisely told "this study showed that x grams of this food daily over 3 months helped with [health problem]." Then for the author to spell out what that means for daily or weekly intake of the food or the nutrient. It's difficult to take the information and translate it into a daily practice. Apparently there's a section ahead that talks about menus, but I'd honestly like to use the data to put together my own, and that's difficult to do with the way the information is presented.
Overall, it's a good read with good current information, nothing of the "fad diet" about it.

The Audibook Version of Nutrivore is Amazing!!!
I just finished listening to the audiobook version of Nutrivore, which is another masterpiece by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne! She did an awesome job of narrating the audiobook, which is packed with so much valuable information related to nutrients, but goes above and beyond other books that discuss nutrient density. While I highly recommend reading or listening to the entire book, my favorite chapters were Chapter 9 and Chapter 10, as Chapter 9 discusses the Nutrivore foundational foods, while in Chapter 10 Dr. Sarah discusses some common myths related to foods, including whether it's okay to eat frozen foods, canned foods, nonorganic foods, goitrogenic foods, foods high in oxalates, etc. Make sure you also check out the accompanying PDF.

Paradigm Shift in Nutrition
Dr. Sarah Ballantyne successfully explains how the food we eat impacts our health in very direct ways. She clearly explains not only the ramifications of nutritional deficiencies on our health and well-being, but offers a solid argument for diversifying our diets to include multiple types of nutritious foods for the best health outcomes. I have also purchased this book for several of my family members.

Excellent and Refreshing
The content of this book is a MUST for anyone trying to find a common-sense voice among the hordes of people giving diet and health advice. This is doable, encouraging, and hopeful.
The enthusiasm of Dr. Ballantyne is obvious as she reads this book, but there are times when she over-pronounces some words and it sounds a little artificial. But I was able to time that out and really take in all the great information offered here. And the PDF materials were super helpful too!
