Symone D. Sanders
About this listen
In this rousing call to leadership, the self-described millennial spokesperson for the culture, CNN’s designated "woke AF" former commentator, and the youngest national press secretary in the history of the United States shares her take-no-prisoners approach to life, politics, and career success, and shows a new generation how to be loud and powerful in their own right.
Many people - most notably white older men - may try to stop Symone Sanders from speaking up and out. But Symone will not shut up. And neither should you. In this inspiring call to action, Symone tells stories from her own life of not-shutting-up alongside loud young revolutionaries who came before her to help you find your authentic voice and use it to your advantage; to fight ideological battles more effectively; and to resist those who try to silence you.
We are all gurus, masterminds, artists, entrepreneurs - we are the change agents we have been waiting for. It is us. And the time is right now. I know you’re wondering, “But how?” And we don’t have all the answers! Symone is the first to admit we’re all winging it in one way or another. But the point is we’re out there doing it. So get started. Open your mouth and start talking. Loudly. No You Shut Up goes beyond the surplus of “Vote-or-Die” books we’ve seen before. Because change doesn’t just happen at the ballot box. We need people fighting oppression, injustice, and inequality - in the workplace, on the cultural battlefield, in government, in every corner of the world.
With spirited storytelling filtered through a voice that cannot and will not be ignored, Symone inspires you to start now. You don’t need to have all the answers, or wait your turn to help create the change you want to see. All you need is a new toolbox, an unshakable commitment, and the confidence and guidance to wield those tools effectively.

In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Story
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

To grow up in the 1950s was to enter a world of polarized national alliances, nuclear threat, and destabilized social hierarchies. To be a privileged white girl in conservative, segregated Virginia was to be expected to adopt a willful blindness to the inequities of race and the constraints of gender. For young Drew Gilpin Faust, the acceptance of both female subordination and racial privilege proved intolerable and galvanizing. Urged to become “well adjusted" and to fill the role of a poised young lady that her upbringing imposed, she found resistance was the necessary price of survival.

The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Despite her skills as a violinist and music teacher, as well as her obvious entrepreneurial talent, she had to fight to overcome self-doubt and fears of failure. Sheila vividly details her struggles, including battling institutional racism, losing a child, suffering emotional abuse in her thirty-three-year marriage, and plunging into a deep depression with her divorce. And yet, out of that pain came renewed purpose and meaning.

This is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have, what rights Republicans are trying to take away, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past.

Piece of Advice — Recommend this audiobook!
I enjoyed listening to Ms. Sanders discuss her professional journey. Here, she shares her passion for politics and for youth advocacy, her impressive range of knowledge on a variety of topics important to so many Americans, and her unflinching belief in herself as a change agent. Many young women, especially young women of color, would benefit from Sanders’ self reflection and pieces of advice. Even more, Sanders is out here doing the work while remaining true to herself.
I look forward to more great things from Ms. Symone Sanders!!!

A primer for every young person seeking to influence or gain power
It took me 54 years of activism to understand the well exemplified lessons that Symone D Sanders – Townsend seeks to impart to her readers. With a catchy title that will resonate with her core audience, millennials, this book should and will appeal to a much broader audience. Do not be fooled, it is the basics of learning to exist near power, achieve your own power, and manage the ups and downs that come with powerful positions.
As a baby boomer who lived through the era of women achieving power in business, I readily recognize all of these lessons and was grateful for the youthful voice, reminding me of many of my own experiences.
I applaud Ms. Sanders – Townsend and commend her for sharing her experiences in a voice that is both compelling and inspiring.
It is an engaging read that I would encourage anyone to enjoy, and either reminisce on, or learn the lessons she shares from her life and fount of knowledge

Simone Sanders gives you an authentic perspective of a Black progressives woman building a career in politics and all the nuances and challenges that come with it. Sanders is open and truthful. Sanders career makes me think that their political axis has shifted and adapted with opportunities. For people with careers in politics, What comes first: the ideals or the job opportunities?
