About this listen

Arguing from Scripture and history, Dr. Boyd makes a compelling case that whenever the church gets too close to any political or national ideology, it is disastrous for the church and harmful to society. Dr. Boyd contends that the American Evangelical Church has allowed itself to be co-opted by the political right (and some by the political left), and exposes how this is harming the church's unique calling to build the kingdom of God.

In the course of his argument, Dr. Boyd challenges some of the most deeply held convictions of evangelical Christians in America for example, that America is, or ever was, "a Christian nation" or that Christians ought to be trying to "take America back for God".

Pastor Boyd is spot on!

Americans need to read this book, reflect and humbly pray for authentic christianity to overcome the evil inspired distraction ,confusion and sin that exists throughout their culture and society.

Thoughtful approach to a christian response to nationalism. Are we citizens of this world? He argues we are citizens of the Kingdom of God.

Leads to Libertarianism

This is a good and worthwhile book for Christians. Although, a few logical errors might exist, and Boyd does not address crucial questions of how to evaluate laws as just or unjust, a glaring omission which is of interest to us. If one applies his good principles consistently, then Christians would be obligated to adopt at least a libertarian political philosophy (which I consider to be a good thing). However, I believe that Boyd was not knowledgeable enough about political philosophy to realize that such a conclusion results from his own beliefs.

Give to your friends

A wakeup call for conservative Christian America. A bold prophetic read! This book tackles the issue of why Christian America is so caught up in politico. And how that's not something Jesus ever taught or stood for. Boyd is by no means a pacifist. He puts faith in the way of Jesus front and center. The only way to not absorb this book is to close it before it's too late.

Committed, comprehensive, clear & consistent

I’ve been a Christian minister for 45 years and have been an avid reader for even longer. If I could recommend only a couple of dozen books for a Christian to take in and deeply digest over the course of a lifetime, this would certainly be one of them. And I would recommend they took it in and consumed near the start of their walk with Christ and re-visit it regularly throughout their walk.

Must Read for anyone following Jesus

This is a wonderful representation of how exactly the world has perverted the Christian faith from a power under focused on the margins, self sacrifice and giving to a power over where control, influence and power are the primary focus pushing a human interpretation of Christian ideals forced on people not following Christ.

Love this book and this challenge it brings

A must read for Christians

This book confirmed what I have been feeling these past few years. I believe we need to take back the name of Christianity for what it should be.

So very relevant - especially in America today

Truth for the church, even if we struggle to receive it. Although the US audience is targeted, some of these truths are relevant to the church in places as far flung as the UK and Nigeria. ( I've lived and worshipped in both countries). If you're a dyed in the wool conservative, this book may be an eye opener - there is indeed a difference between Christianity and conservatism. I'm not sure where I stand on the topic of pacifism, but just about everything else the author discuses is clearly supported by scripture.
