About this listen
Former Southern Baptist pastor and Christianity Today editor-in-chief Russell Moore calls for repentance and renewal in American evangelicalism
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”
In Losing Our Religion, Russell Moore calls his fellow evangelical Christians to conversion over culture wars, to truth over tribalism, to the gospel over politics, to integrity over influence, and to renewal over nostalgia. With both prophetic honesty and pastoral love, Moore offers a word of counsel for how a new generation of disillusioned and exhausted believers can find a path forward after the crisis and confusion of the last several years. Believing the gospel is too important to leave it to hucksters and grifters, he shows how a Christian can avoid both cynicism and complicity in order to imagine a different, hopeful vision for the church.
The altar call of the old evangelical revivals was both a call to repentance and the offer of a new start. In the same way, this book invites unmoored and discouraged Christians to step out into an uncertain future, first by letting go of the kind of cultural, politicized, status quo Christianity that led us to this moment of reckoning. Only when we see how lost we are, we can find our way again. Only when we bury what’s dead can we experience life again. Only when we lose our religion can we be amazed by grace again.

By analyzing the literature, art, and popular culture that has surrounded evangelicalism, she unpacks some of the movement's most deeply held concepts, ideas, values, and practices to consider what is Christian rather than merely cultural. The result is a clearer path forward for evangelicals amid their current identity crisis—and insight for others who want a deeper understanding of what the term "evangelical" means today.

Ward sheds light on the evangelical movement's troubling political and cultural dimensions, tracing the ways in which the Jesus People movement was seduced by materialism and other factors to become politically captive rather than prophetic.

How can we converse with people whose views differ from our own? In The Ballot and the Bible, Kaitlyn Schiess explores these questions and more. How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Story
Beginning with contemporary efforts to reckon with the legacy of white supremacy in America, Jones returns to the fateful year when a little-known church doctrine emerged that shaped the way five centuries of European Christians would understand the “discovered” world and the people who populated it. From this vantage point, Jones illuminates how the enslavement of Africans was not America’s original sin but, rather, the continuation of acts of genocide and dispossession flowing from the first European contact with Native Americans.

Story
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

N. T. Wright—widely regarded as the most influential commentator and interpreter of Paul—deftly unpacks this dense and sometimes elusive letter, detailing Paul's arguments and showing how it illuminates the Gospel from the promises to Abraham through the visions of Revelation. Wright takes a deep dive into Romans 8, showing how it illuminates so much else that God reveals in Scripture: God the Father, Christology, and the Spirit; Jesus' Messiahship, cross, resurrection, and ascension; salvation, redemption, and adoption; suffering and glory; holiness and hope.

From the moment He arrived on the scene, Jesus posed a threat to the unjust, a threat to the oppressors, and a threat to every semblance of authority wielded by the kingdom of darkness. As the culture changes all around us, it is no longer possible to pretend that we are a moral majority. That may be bad news for America, but it can be good news for the church. What's needed now, in shifting times, is neither a doubling down on the status quo nor a pullback into isolation. Instead we need a church that speaks to social and political issues with a bigger vision in mind: that of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

“The scandal of the evangelical mind is that there is not much of an evangelical mind". So begins this award-winning intellectual history and critique of the evangelical movement by one of evangelicalism’s most respected historians. Unsparing in his indictment, Mark Noll asks why the largest single group of religious Americans—who enjoy increasing wealth, status, and political influence—have contributed so little to rigorous intellectual scholarship.

Story
Is it possible to disagree politically and love unconditionally? The reaction of evangelicals to political and cultural shifts in recent years revealed what they value most. Lurking beneath our Bible-laced rhetoric, faith claims, books, and sermons is a relentless drive to WIN! But the church is not here to win. By every human measure, our Savior lost. On purpose. With a purpose. And we are his body. We are not in it to win anything. We are in it for something else entirely. That something else is what this book is about.

Critic reviews
“Russell Moore tells it straight about how the church has lost its way. Then he shows a path forward, to a Christianity that’s not about fear or anger or political power but about really Good News for all people. This book can help a new generation find the way back to what really matters." —John M. Perkins, civil rights activist, minister, author, One Blood: Parting Words to the Church on Race
"Russell Moore's gentle, courageous voice has a way of cutting through the clamor of the age, right down to the marrow of what matters—and it’s clear that what matters to Moore, whether he’s writing about theology or politics, comic books or country songs, is Jesus.” —Andrew Peterson, singer/songwriter and author of Adorning the Dark: Thoughts on Community, Calling, and the Mystery of Making
“Russell Moore’s Losing Our Religion is head-shakingly good. By the time I’d underlined at least one sentence in every paragraph of the first two chapters, I knew I was reading a book I’d keep within easy reach for years to come. Russ writes with a remarkable blend of clarity, color and candor. More importantly, the ink on these pages is drawn from a deep well of biblical conviction that drives the author’s decisions. Here you go: a gift of gospel-centered sanity in a culture gone utterly mad.” —Beth Moore, author of All My Knotted-Up Life: A Memoir

A universal pattern can be found in all societies and in fact in all of creation. We see it in the seasons of the year; the stories of Scripture; the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus; the rise and fall of civilizations; and even in our own lives. In this new version of one of his earlier books, Father Richard Rohr illuminates the way understanding and embracing this pattern can give us hope in difficult times and the courage to push through messiness and even great chaos to find a new way of being in the world.

Story
In 2016, writer and filmmaker Ben Howe found himself disillusioned with the religious movement he’d always called home. In the pursuit of electoral victory, many American evangelicals embraced moral relativism and toxic partisanship. Whatever happened to the Moral Majority, who headed to Washington in the ’80s to plant the flag of Christian values? Where were the Christian leaders that emerged from that movement and led the charge against Bill Clinton for his deception and unfaithfulness?

Every generation faces the temptation to wander from orthodoxy—to seek out the jolt that comes with false teaching, and to drift with cultural currents. And so every generation must be awakened again to the thrill of orthodoxy, and experience the astonishment that comes from stumbling afresh upon the electrifying paradoxes at the heart of the Christian faith. In The Thrill of Orthodoxy, Trevin Wax turns the tables on those who believe Christian teaching is narrow and outdated.

Story
The average Christian in America does not know what his own religion teaches, nor does he care. He may call himself “Christian”, but he lives his life exactly as he wishes, making no attempt to conform his conduct to the commands and tenets of his religion. Daily Wire writer Matt Walsh confronts his fellow Christians in this bold, clear-eyed book that serves as an urgent reminder of Matthew 7:13 - "For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it."

Alisa Childers never thought she would question her Christian faith. She was raised in a Christian home, where she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and love the outcast. She had witnessed God at work and then had dedicated her own life to leading worship as part of the popular Christian band ZOEgirl. All that was deeply challenged when she met a progressive pastor who called himself a hopeful agnostic. Another Gospel? describes the intellectual journey Alisa took over several years as she wrestled with a series of questions.

Instead we need a church that speaks to social and political issues with a bigger vision in mind: that of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Persistently worried that her gay grandfather would go to hell unless she could reach him, or that her Muslim friend would need to be converted, and that she, too, would go to hell if she did not believe fervently enough, McCammon was a rule-follower. But through it all, she was plagued by fears and deep questions as the belief system she'd been carefully taught clashed with her expanding understanding of the outside world.

The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

In The Liturgy of Politics, Schiess shows that the church's politics are shaped by its habits and practices, even when it's unaware of them.

Story
From America's beginning, Christians have often merged their religious faith with national identity. But what is Christian nationalism? Paul D. Miller, a Christian scholar, political theorist, veteran, and former White House staffer, provides a detailed portrait of—and case against—Christian nationalism. Miller shows what's at stake if we misunderstand the relationship between Christianity and the American nation. Christian nationalism is an illiberal political theory, at odds with the genius of the American experiment, and could prove devastating to both church and state.

It is time says Jim Wallis, to call out genuine faith—specifically the “Christian” in White Christian Nationalism—inviting all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. We need–to raise up the faith of all of us, and help those who are oblivious, stuck, and captive to the ideology and idolatry of White Christian Nationalism that is leading us to such great danger. Wallis turns our attention to six iconic texts at the heart of what genuine biblical faith means and what Jesus, in the gospels, has called us to do.

An Honest and Hopeful Book
Russell Moore is a stand-out character. He reminds me of Paul, as he could also say “follow me as I follow Christ.” He is aware of his shortcomings and freely admits them, while at the same time freely boasting in Christ and resting in his identity in Him. It gets so wearisome listening to Christians who seem to think they have a charge to take up some sort of fight for God. I think they’ve forgotten that God does not need their help; it is a twisted and worldly view of strength. What a joy to watch Russell stand firmly in His faith, girded with spiritual armor, loving his neighbors well. His speech is always kind and gracious, never belittling others or tearing them down. I would say he is meek, like our Savior: truly strong, steadfast, and self-controlled. I will read this book again and will commend it to others. It is honest and hopeful and important for our age.

An honest internal look at one’s beliefs
The writer has clearly gone through a journey of soul searching of his beliefs and a critical review of the business of Christianity at least within evangelical circles. He gets a bit preachy but it’s his way of making his points and that’s ok. It’s a good read. I fear though that the people who need it most are not likely to pick it up. It’s sad how right wing political operatives have so deeply infiltrated the Christian faith.
My only feedback is he should spend more time with secular people. We are not as lost as he may think we are.

A Clear and Needed Call
If you only read one book this summer, make it this one. Dr. Moore diagnoses where we are (as a culture, as The Church, and as Evangelicals in particular), how we got here, and where we are going. Moore speaks with the gentleness of a pastor, with no anger or resentment, no ominous threats, but with the clear, firm warning of a father or a friend. Profound, yet understandable, filled with Scripture references, Moore makes a clear and compelling case, with concrete steps at the end of each chapter. If you have at all felt disoriented or disillusioned or isolated by the social, political, and religious winds blowing through our churches and culture, you will find this book especially reassuring and helpful.
I pray we all heed this doctor's prescription.

Wise, incisive, timely, necessary
Dr. Moore gives us the perfect proportions of personal narrative, in-house critique, and cultural analysis to understand where evangelicalism is and where it might go if followers of Jesus will walk down the aisle again, repent, and surrender ourselves to him.

This made me feel like I’m not alone
Russell Moore put into words what I’ve been silently feeling for years, but felt alone and unable to express. I’m so grateful. I highly recommend this book if you’ve been struggling with “church culture,” and the way it blends with political and social culture. Bonus: Moore’s voice is very pleasant to listen to!

His heroic stance about politics and Trumpism. How he demonstrates the pitfalls of mixing politics & religion.
I loved the explanations of God through the Bible. How he recognizes the need for separation of church and state in a free, democratic society.

A Prophetic Call to Renewal
Losing Our Religion is a Scripture-based appeal to the American church to turn from tribalism to truth, from culture wars to conversion and from nostalgia to genuine revival. Dr. Moore challenges us to put our hope in Christ rather than political power, embrace our identity as exiles and live out our faith in a way that showcases the goodness and beauty of the Gospel. Candid, witty and authentic, this book is a prophetic call for our times!

I appreciate this book & its message
As an evangelical from since the time I can remember, I have found myself unable to fully put into words the frustration and disappointment I feel about my “tribe”. I’m baffled by many of their unbiblical stances and hypocrisy. This book helps put words to my feelings, but not in a way that bashes our tribe, but in a way that is truly calling for their repentance. I will join him in praying for this too.
